Why do you need an excuse? If you want something.... go get it!

The one thing that always confuses me is when some dude gets sports car or a musclecar he does not need everybody praise is it and loves it and does not question it as a decision.

He got the car because he wanted it and it was fun.

But then when somebody gets a truck, maybe only because they WANT it or is maybe more of a truck than they honestly need they get criticized.

What do you need that for?
Do you even tow anything?

My favorite is when guys at work think you just daily drive you truck to the grocery store because “we never see you towing or hauling anything”. ....What the ****? Am I supposed to bring my truck to work and show them every time i hook up a trailer or fill the bed with wood?

MY POINT,

get what you want and **** everyone else.

I have an ‘18 Ram 3500 regular cab with the 6.4 motor. I pull a 5th wheel camper that weighs 15k pounds. The truck came with 4.10 gears. I have 295/70R18 Michelin Defender tires. The gears have been changed to 5.13 ratio, AAM in the rear and Nitro in the front. At 70 MPH I run at 2200 RPM and it feels fine. The new gears make a difference towing but the truck still struggles up the steeper interstate highway hills. My mileage changed very little over all but I drive it easy.

If not for heavy towing I would be happy with the truck but I need it to pull the mountain passes and last a long time so I am going back to diesel power in the near future.

Yeah, if you're towing 15k on any kind of "regular" basis, being it once a month or a few times a week, I would go diesel. If it were a once a year thing, I can see sticking with the 6.4, but 15k is hard on a 6.4

I find these hilarious considering there were plenty of one ton duallys running around with straight 6s and 3 speeds before the diesel era started.

It comes down to the fact that guys want to run 65-70 no matter the grade either empty or towing maxed out. I love my 6.4. Empty it is a beast. Towing my 42' 5th wheel, it slows down some, but it pulls it regardless. Other than being able to go 70 up all the hills, and of course a little less mpg, it does just fine

Would I rather have a Cummins, yes I would. But, my Hemi gets it done.

Side note, my dad had a friend who owned a tow company. Only thing he would run was a 390 Ford, regardless of the truck He retrofitted one into an Isuzu roll back. The man loves big block glasses

Same here. I traded my duramax for a 6.4 and now my family wonders how I will haul hay or farm equipment. Funny thing is my trailers are smaller than what my dad pulled with an 80's model chevy 350 w/ 4 speed.

Surely the 6.4 can pull better than an old carbed 350 lol.

Has anyone had any shudder issues on takeoff when turning a corner after the gear swap?

I have almost saved up enough for my gear change. Trying to decide on gear ratio. I’m running 295/70/18 and towing 14k bumper pull.

I’m thinking 4:88 but also considering 5:13.
I like to tow at 60-65mph.
It seems 5:13 would have to be in 5th gear at that speed. Not sure if it would be able to stay in fifth and 4th would be to much rpm.

so I’m thinking 4:88 and plan on being in 4th gear and maybe hold 5th on flat ground now wind lol

but those 5:13 wold be awesome on hills.

5.13’s all day! Especially with that monster behind your truck

Never

If it gets worse tak it in. That is bad for just about everything in your trans if it becomes very prominent

Spot on Jeff!

If ANYONE tows campers that big 5.13’s should be a must.

IMO the truck should come with 4.56 on the stock 33’s with a 4.88 option.

im worried it won’t hold 5th while towing and they would force me to slow way down and use 4th

Well, picked up my 14,200lb 5th wheel 2019 FOREST RIVER CEDAR CREEK SILVERBACK 37RTH. I don't know what it would have been like with the 373's but I will tell you, the 456 will get this down the highway @ 65 MPH 2600 rpm with power to spare. You may not take off from a stop like you are at the drag strip, but a solid pull through the gears and getting up to speed. You should use the tow haul as it seemed like the transmission would slip sometimes between shifts. I am not smart on this stuff so any inputs about the trans are much appreciated. Oh did I forget? 65mph cruise control and getting 9.2 mpg on the flat land. I wasnt getting that with my truck camper and boat attached (approx 6400 lbs) with the 373's.
What gear are you pulling 65 and 2600 rpm? 4th?

I switched to 4.56's with stock tires. My 5th wheel loaded comes in at 13-13,500. It pulls it down the road nicely. It stays in 5th most of the time at about 2,300RPM. Up hills it will kick down to 4th at around 3,000RPM. Somewhere on one of these re-gear threads there is a gear/RPM calculator. That might give you a better idea of where you'd like to be.

What are the stock gears in the truck (3.73 or 4.10)? What transmission gear does it hold now when towing?
5.13 gears and 5th gear would be about the same as 4.10 gears and 4th gear in regards to overall gear ratio and engine rpm at a certain speed.

I tow a 14k lb 5th wheel and went 4.88s and it does pretty good now. I can run 60-65 usually without much trouble. I am in WV though so nothing is flat here. But when towing, 5.13 would be nice, but I love the 4.88s for just normal daily driving. I am running 34" tires on my stock 20" rims.

Below is a pic of my truck at 65 mph with the 4.88s in 5th to simulate towing.
