today for the first time ever, I started my 2014 RAM 1500, 130K miles, the check engine light was on, and the P above the shift knob was flashing... each time I moved the knob to R, D, P and all across the dial the letter above the knob flashed and the RAM would not engage in gear... after starting and turning off/removing the key several times, all of a sudden after several minutes the RAM did in fact move in forward and reverse and did so for the rest of the day.

I have not yet determined the data of the check engine light. Anybody have an idea? Youtube tells me it might be a malfunction of the rams module behind the rotarty knob...

Check the cheap and simple stuff first. How old is the battery and has it been tested?

best,

Here’s a link to a YouTube video I used when I had a similar issue. Read the comments there’s a few additional suggestions in there as well.

I think I knocked something in the wiring harness when I put my reverse cam in. Not sure if you could have knocked anything under the dash.

SO I am retired and only drive the RAM 2-3 times per week. We have been having extreme cold down in the teens recently. I drove it the day prior to getting this error then parked in the driveway. In the 20's after getting down to single digits I had this error code and not being able to shift into gear. To be sure you understand, the rotary knob turns but the lit gear above the knob just flashes no matter where you are turned to. I did turn off the engine and restart several times. After about 5 minutes of running the knob finally did shift into D and I drove off. I drove for 20 minutes parked for 30 then restarted and drove home with no issues. After a mild mid-20's overnight it started fine and drove fine the next day.

The day I had the original problem my CEL was lit, but no CEL today, The code I found was P1B14 after hooking up reader.

I then checked this site and YouTube. The common thread thru those resources was LOW FLUID and cold temps. I last changed my tranny fluid at 65K miles and I now have 130K.

I am hoping the cold is the culprit, as I have never since buying this RAM in 2016 had an issue with the tranny. When it warms up a little I will force a bit more fluid in, and see what happens. Then maybe change out the fluid again as I do tow about 5,000 lba occasionally.

Just saw this, that's about the time I was running errands all day, pulled into a shop to see what was up, went to leave, nothing couldn't use the jump box, jump start did not work, Called O'Reilly's they brought a battery and she fired right up! $175 battery and I was off! I've only had 2 vehicles do that in the middle of the day and one on my 2004 Dakota, the other on the 2016 Ram. The battery in the Ram was right at 3 years old!

3 years is a good run. Batteries used to just keep radio station memory when ignition was off. Now they power computers and can go dead if you don’t drive them every week or two.
