On the 2500's you pop off the part of the knob with the shift pattern on it, once it's off there is a nut you loosen. I don't know if 1500's are the same, but its worth a shot.

What gear jammer said…pop cover with shift pattern, remove nut, unscrew knob
Recommend the Core short shifter if you’re looking for such a thing. Have had mine for well over 200k miles (with supplied hurst knob) and it’s still working great.

It's a floor shifter for a red cab 3.7 St trim model 2 wheel dr . I tried popping the top where the gear pattern is and no luck
