TIPM Question:
So over the last two weeks I have been having some funky issues with my 4wd. My serv 4wd light has been flashing at random times and speeds and then it's also been switching into 4wd on it's own. However, the light doesn't come on when it's switching in and out. Finally took it to a shop today and they're saying it's the TIPM. I just want to make sure that it couldn't be anything else before I go down that. The code that it's throwing is U0184. Pictures are of what they took.

Seems like a pretty straight forward swap for a TIPM if I buy a rebuilt one who flashes it for me. Shop wanted 1300 to switch it, seems like I could save a good chunk doing it on my own.

Is there anything else I should check before diving into it? Thank you!!

Have never seen a truck do this from a bad TIPM not saying its not impossible but usually its the motor/range sensor on the tcase you could also have a bad switch. Is this a indipendant shop or just some dump like a quick lube/midas ect? Also if you dont use 4wd often and dont want to fix it right now just get it into 2wd and pull the fuse then it cant switch to 4x4.

It's a very highly rated transmission shop in my area. I agree, I haven't read anything about the 4WD being affected like that from the TIPM but there's also so many different ways that it can manifest issues. I pulled the fuse so we should be good and not have it switching. I'll just need the 4WD before hunting season in August so it gives me some time! Thanks for the response. I might look into those other possibilities first.

What's odd, is with the pulled fuse the light still flashes at times which makes me wonder if it's not coming from the 4WD system itself but something like the switch.

I'll try that. Do you mean the selector switch right below the radio? Just pop the bezel off and unplug it, right? Just making sure I'm thinking of the right thing lol

Just buy a spare tipm…they’re awfully nice to have for troubleshooting. Purchased mine years ago for well under $300 from Summit to troubleshoot an issue that ended up being a broken wire in the harness. Couple years later at around 300k my original tipm went kooky and had a spare to swap in. Spare pcm also nice to have…just fixed a problem with that at 420k.

And both are very easy to swap

I have the service manual for the 2008. PM me and I'll be happy to share. There is a lot about troubleshooting codes. I had problems with my 4WD for a long time and finally fixed it. Works great. The manual helped me eliminate a lot of possible causes and zero in on the problem. Also, I started getting a strange couplet of codes related to my hood switch and my AAT sensor. Was able to figure out that the problem was in the TIPM. Missed it at first but after going in a second time, I finally saw the corosion built up in the male pins in the TIPM receptor connector. Used a small file and rubbed off the corrosion. Fixed my problem. No need for a new TIMP (yet). Service manual and my multimeter helped me pinpoint this. The code you mention has nothing to do with 4WD as far as I can tell. Not sure I follow the logic to replacing the TIPM. Maybe there is such logic, but I don't understand.
