I have a 01 dodge ram 1500 sport 5.2L 4x4. And I went from 31s to a set of 35x12.50x17 nitto trail grapplers and a 2" leveling kit. And my gas mileage and power dropped pretty good. What all can I do to get the mileage and power back. I've already got exhaust. And what kind of gears should I put in it the help with my power and gas mileage. Thanks for any advice.

Regear it to 4.10 or 4.56. Your fuel economy is never going to be as good as when you had the 31's on....

Yeah I know I want be back to same mileage as I used to be id just like to have just a little bit more fuel gain. And want 4.56 gears make me run higher rpms. Its mostly a asphalt truck other than hauling hay and tractors every once in a while.

4.56 gears will help drive-ability.
Removing rotational inertia will be the only thing that'll really help bring back your MPGs

Gears for power, a heavy pocket book for MPG.

I went with 4.56 in my truck when I went to a 33-34 inch tall tire

it was a good mod...costly but good...id suggest a limited slip locker while your in there

You need 4.56 gears for 35's. Will help mileage and will really help power, plus you wont kill your driveline senselessly. Welcome to owning a lifted truck! :D

Lol I see everyone recomends 4.56 gears but how will they do as far as being on the highway running 65-70 mph how will my rpms be and would I not need a programmer to reprogram my speedometer.

About the highway, who cares. Any savings youd get with higher gears in fuel mileage will be gone when you rebuild the trans from having to high a gears. It will be a few hundred extra rpm, but far worth it. And im not sure on the speedo, but that can also be done with a gear in the trans. You know bigger tires throw it off to right?

I believe you can only switch out the speedo gear to fix it on '94-'97.

94-97 is the speedo gear. 98s were weird, but most you can't really mess with.

For 35's, 4.56 gears will put you just a hair over stock compared to 31s and 3.55s.

Thanks everyone I think I know what gears to go with now lol. Other than adding 4.56 gears anything else I'd need to do. I know the 35s threw off my speedometer a fee miles so I fig the gears will also. Will I need to do anything with my transmission? I dont think so. But I am going to have to get it rebuild here soon would their be anything yall recommend me doing to it since ill be having to go into it to rebuild it? Thanksfor all the advice. I just want it back as close to it used to be as I can. Thanks..

Sonnax sure cure kit. Ive heard nothing but good about it, I plan to put one of those in mine when I have to rebuild. Upgrades some of the weaker parts in the 46RE.Not necasarry just nice to have! Other then that those gears should be all ya need!

Get ready to be replacing ball joints and hubs yearly though :hidesbehindsofa:

4.56s will do wonders...I have them in my 96 ram with a 5" lift and it drives like an average (taken care of) dodge ram I avg about 17 mpg highway going 70mph. Just cruising. In town I get about 12mpg. It cost me $500 for gears and bearings (for one axle) through Randys ring and pinion in franklin tn. Its worth the cash to get away from the 3.55 gears cause with a lift and 35s the 3.55s will eat that transmission lol
