So I’m looking to getting a new vehicle and I saw this ‘01 1500 shortbed come up for sale online. It’s a shortbed 5.7 with 161,000mi. What are something I should be weary of?

161,000 miles is something you may think about , that’s getting up there in miles. You appear to be in Ohio , what’s the body ,frame look like for rust ? Is the price fair? Transmission fluid smell, look okay ?

First, check that engine info again. 2001 1500s came with the 3.9L V-6, 5.2L and 5.9L V-8s. The 5.9L had an intake plenum problem of leaking oil. I've read about cracks in the heads between the valves, but I didn't have a need to open mine up. My (now my dad's) 5.9L has over 330k miles and has not needed engine work, but it will in the near future. It's starting to burn oil.

What transmission does it have? The 46RE in mine only lasted a little over 100k miles. Once it's rebuilt with better than factory parts, it does much better.

My rear pinion seal failed in the high 200k mileage.

Like Daw said, check for rust. The biggest rust problems on those are the bottom panels of the doors and rocker panels.
