I have a 2017 Ram Big Horn with the 5.7 Hemi. Recently started having issues with starting after the truck has been sitting in the hot sun all day. I live in Arizona so the temps hover around 105 to 110+ for the day. When starting the engine, it will crank but no start. I usually let it crank for 10 to 15 seconds. Usually after the 3rd attempt, the engine will start. There are no check engine lights or codes. Dealer says the fuel pump is putting out 58 psi. Once after fueling up, the truck would not start at all. Had it towed to the dealer and it started right up for them. Wondering if anyone else has experienced any similar issues. The dealer did install a fuel pump overlay (wiring harness), but that doesn't appear to have cured the problem.

Added caveat......morning starts are not an issue. Starts every time.

Any information would be useful

Fuel line vapor lock? I’ve never seen it on something this new but a possibililty?

Surely you dont have an exhaust leak on a 2017 but I have heard the extra heat under the hood from an exhaust leak will cause vapor lock.

This usually happens after the vehicle has been sitting for the day. Only once did it happen after filling the gas tank.

I have had a similar rough start issue a few times. Same scenario, sitting in the hot AZ sun all day. When I leave work and remote start my truck I hear it hiccup and barely idle for a few seconds. Then clears itself up. Never had this issue before work or when its cold outside.

Does yours do this every day? I think your best bet would be just to leave it at the dealership all day and have them try and start it.

The fuel pump was putting out 58 psi when it started and ran, BUT that may not be the case when it does not start. Electric fuel pumps can be intermittent. I had a relative with what turned out to be an intermittent pump, and the only way they finally found it was to hook up the fuel pressure gauge and route the hose out of the engine bay and tape the gauge to the windshield. Keep trying to repeat the issue and drive the truck. If you have a no-start episode and the fuel pressure is 8 psi, you found it. If it is holding 58 psi and not starting, the issue is elsewhere. If it is under warranty you have to find a dealer who will commit to proper troubleshooting.

Hi gears49,

Is your vehicle still currently at the dealer? Please send us a PM with your VIN and mileage so that we can create a case on your behalf.

The vehicle is not at the dealer. They won't keep it because they cannot duplicate the problem. I took a video of the truck yesterday when it wouldn't start. It was 106 degrees outside and had been sitting for about 6 hours.

VIN is 1C6RR6LT1HS500908

At first I thought the fuel pump was losing its prime but that isn't the case. The time it wouldn't start at the gas station, the temperature was cool and I had just driven the truck. I cycled the key several times and it still wouldn't start.

I'm taking it to the dealer today, with video, and leaving it with them. Will tell them to fix it or keep it. I bought this truck to travel. I can't trust it to travel therefore it is useless to me. It's a shame because I love the truck.

Darlene, How do I send a PM.

Have them test your battery to remove the possibility of anything weird electrically going on...

Also worth checking is the alarm feature that immobilizes the engine, preventing starts. The electronics may have an issue.

The saga continues. After multiple extended crank starts with a new fuel pump overlay, they replaced the fuel pump. Said it was intermittent. Yesterday in Tombstone, AZ, again, no start. Took 4 extended cranks to get it running. Back to the dealership.

The engine cranks over but will not start. Battery is strong.

You sir have way more patience then I, I wouldn’t even know what to do if I spent that much on a truck and then that starts happening. I hope it gets figured out bud, good luck.

Horrible. The condition you have explained, from my experience, can be found in the ECM. May have stored a no engine light code. If the dealer is willing to take the time they can scan for the no start condition. But it does take time and the tech needs to know what they are seeing. Then they must know what components to test. Intermittent conditions are a *****. But, it could be as simple as a ground interrupt. Sure hope you can get the dealer to dig in, check out and resolve.

I work in the industry. Taught Automotive Technology for 13 years. No code drivability issues are a bear, especially when they are intermittent and won't repeat at the dealership. No codes, stored or otherwise, to set the technician on a trail he can follow. Off to see the wizard......Chrysler engineers.

Yeah, no codes = no work done, ASE cert = follow codes, if no codes, then your **** out of luck.

There’s no more diagnostic testing, it’s just plug it in, and if no codes then send the customer on their way with a “can’t find anything” “nothing is wrong” bs!

When I was in school, it was, hand the student a test light and multi meter, and let them figure the problem out.

This is the reason I’ve got my eye on a 95 2500 5.9 pre obd truck. I’m tired of not being able to fix my own **** without a 2,000$ tool!

Ok, so it's back to the dealership. Parts so far are fuel pump overlay, fuel pump, and injectors. They said the injectors were bleeding down and it was relatively common issue. Still not fixed. I'm theorizing that it's electrical, say factory theft prevention. I'm wondering if the coils are getting a signal to fire. Hmmmm, perplexing.

Hope you have good news by now because I need some help with the same issues. Intermittent by weeks or can be days and you sit and crank on it 2-4 times and that changes too. Dealer doesn't seem to have a clue. I told my son the master mechanic about the issue and he said it's fuel with out looking at it. Told the dealer that and then they hooked up pressure gauges and said the pressure was good. Going back in on Wednesday and if no fixes or answers it could be Lemon Law time. My 2013 was flawless.
