My stock tires are a little too warn for the upcoming winter, so I'm shopping around for new tires. I don't have the funds to upgrade my wheels, but I want a more aggressive tire. I know the stock tires are roughly a 33x11, so my question is will a 33x12.50 be too wide on stock wheels? I know thats an extra 0.75" on each side of the wheel. I'm just curious to see if anyone has done this with no problems or rubbing.

you may need a 1/4" spacer so it doesnt rub, but should work.

I've found a 12.4" is the absolute width limit on my Ram, stock Sport 20" x 9" wheels.

What brand/model tire are you considering?
as I've told many, numbers stamped on the sidewall are rarely a true
indication of the tires actual mounted size.

Best to check the manufacturers website or TireRack.com

Some 12.50 labelled tires actually measure 13.5" wide on a 9" wheel,
some 305's are 11.5" wide others are 12.6" so you need to do your home work.

My 4 y/o 305/50R20 Terra Grapplers measured 12.2" wide x 32.2"
on 20" x 9" Chrome Clad wheels.
and just cleared the upper A arm by 1/4" (no spacers)

BlackRam033.jpg

Also cleared the front sway bar at full steering lock by 1/2"
023.jpg

But that's on a 4x4, I've heard the tire may hit the sway bar on a 2WD.

Here's my latest setup, 305/50R20 General Grabber AT2's
measure 12.4" x 32" on new 14' polished Sport wheels (20" x 9") +19.05mm offset

about 3/8" room, no rub, no spacers

Nice and Beefy , no rubbing without sticking out too far

^informative post! There is a lot of mixed answers on this, some guys get away without a spacer, others don't. I guess it depends on the tire, I'm getting 12.50's mounted on the clads tomorrow and have some 1/4" spacers just in case!

Are your wheels still as pictured in your sig? I think those are 8" wide,
and did you not upgrade to 20" x 9" Sport wheels at some point?

I'm having a deja vu moment here and have a feeling I've had this discussion at least once before.
but it may have been someone else with a similar truck/username
(my memory is usually good, but sometimes selective)

If you have 8" x 20" wheels, most shops wont mount a true 12.5" tire
recommended width is often 8.5-(9.5)-10.5 so its important to research your choice carefully,
You may want to explore your options in a 305 or 295 size
(all with vary between aspect ratios and brand you choose)

OP- a 305 55 20 is a great option to what you are looking to do. Depending on the tire brand used, they are around a 12" width and still right at 33+" tall. Also, they would fit better on a stock wheel IMO. Good luck with whatever you choose and be sure to post pics when done.

I still have the stock wheels that came with the truck at purchase, so they are the same ones that are in my sig photo. I feel like I remember looking at the sticker inside the door and it said the wheel is a 20x9, but I may be mistaken.

I want to get the Cooper Discoverer STTs, but they only offer them in a 20" wheel for 33x12.50s and 35x12.50s. I will eventually get new wheels with a 4.5" backspacing, and at that point I will be leveling the truck and getting 35s. But for now I just want to get an aggressive tire that will fit my stock wheels without leveling, without rubbing, and without having to use spacers. I really appreciate every one's help with this.

I would just buy a set of RCX 1/4 spacers for $35, that way you KNOW they fit instead of mounting them and dealing with rubbing while you track down some spacers to create some clearance. FYI- I've got 12.50" wide tires on stock wheels with said spacer. Good luck!

i was looking at doing the same thing to my truck, i want to do a 33x12.50 on my 14' Sport. i will probably honestly run the 1/4 spacer just to be safe and to poke the tires out a tad more so they dont look sunk in when i put my fender flares on

You can always go 275/65 and not worry about any spacers

The trouble with cheap spacers is they remove the bearing weight off the hub/bore and onto the lugs
in addition to having balance issues because the wheel is much more likely to mounted slightly off-center.

If you have to run a spacer, it's best to spend the extra money on model specific hub centric spacers
instead of cheap $10 universal spacers that don't match your hub bore.

Wheel Spacers explained - from Driftworks - YouTube

Most 295 wide tires should work,
and even some 12.5's and 305's fit fine without spacers.

Just have to make sure the mounted max width does not exceed 12.4"

swordaddy on the "other" ramforum...(with a z) just mounted up some 35" x 12.5" Gladiator MT's

No lift, No level, No wheels spacers, on stock 20" x 9" chrome clads
....slight rub on the front sway bar only at full steering lock

1/4" spacers if you have the 20x9's.

OP, your rims might be the 20x8's... you should check that first.

Are the chrome clad ones the 20x9? Are these the 20x8? I like my stock wheels and want to put 35s on but not sure about the width either. Don't think I can get a 12.5" wide tire on a 8" wide rim
