We will find out - I don't think anyone has done this yet.

Well; I just bought a set of seats from a 5th Gen Crew Cab Sport...and I've got a 4th Gen Crew Sport! The fronts seem like they'll be easy enough (swap over the brackets); the back seat...well, might get interesting.

Will keep everyone posted! If anyone knows of this swap, let me know!

If you could get your hands on seats from a 19+ HD it would be a fairly direct swap. Seats from a 1500 might be a bit of a challenge.

Agreed - but I just don't find the 4th gen seats all that comfortable. Perhaps that is just a different way of saying 'challenge accepted'!

I think the fronts will be fairly straight forward, swap the brackets from the 4th gen seats to the 5th gen seats. Top is the 4th gen seats, bottom is 5th gen.

Now, the back seats - that will be a challenge!

Nice, although I think (don't quote me on this) the HD seats are the same as the 1500 seats just on the old frames still. So pretty much what you're doing anyways.
Good luck, be interesting to see if you can get the new crew cab seats to work in the old shorter crew cab.

emjohn....I pasted a link below from another thread on this forum. It covers a lot of info on the differences between Gen 4 and Gen 5 seating as well as info on differences between 1500 VS the HD Rams. The 2019-2020 HD's are NOT true Gen 5's. They still use the Gen 4 cab and electrical. The 1500 Gen 5's have a different cab and different electrical s. According to the thread I linked a Gen 5 1500 seat will NOT bolt into a Gen 4 1500. A Gen 5 HD seat should since it still uses the Gen 4 cab like you have. Pay close attention to posts #1686, #1691, #1692, #1693, #1694 and #1698. You will see some pics that show some of the wiring differences and the electrical connectors. Good luck in doing this swap.

I think I confused people with the 2020 HD statement.

The seats I bought are from a 2020 1500 Sport; and that is what I am going to attempt to install into my 2012 1500 Sport.

Should be 'fun'!

Well, seats are here!

Fronts look like they will be pretty easy. Swap over the backets. Getting them to work as my current seats do (power only, no heat, no ventalation), will be easy. Incorporating the heating and cooling on my new seats will be a bit more challenging - but I think I can figure it out. Studying schematics now...

Rears might be a bit more challenging. Will need an adapter plate - but doable. I've got one mounted already!

If all goes well, I will have the drivers seat installed Monday.

Passenger side...

I'd like to meet the guy who invented rivets...and have a chat with him. Removing the 'feet' from the 4th Gen Seat.

The 'feet' reinstalled into the truck:

The 5th gen seat - the feet on this one are welded on; and I've already cut them off and ground the welds ground smooth and painted!
IMG_20200217_095415.jpg

Line up 5th gen seat on 4th gen brackets - mark to drill; drill and bolt to 4th gen brackets; and install! :)

IMG_20200217_111653.jpg

I'm going to take them back out once more, and since the 4th gen feet are bolted to the 5th gen seat; have them welded to the seat track. Even though I used grade 8 hardware, the welds are a bit of extra caution, if nothing else!

I've got the power lumbar and power seats hooked up via temporary patch harness. Am looking into how I want to build the full harness - need to source a connector for the 5th gen seats so I can re-pin the 4th gen wires to a new connector that plugs in.

After the harness, it'll be time to grab the switch block for the 4th gen heated and cooled seats, then connect it up to see if the 4th gen electronics will 'talk' to the 5th gen HSM module! If not, it will be easy enough to get some 4th gen HSMs and install.

More as it develops...

Awesome!!
This makes me think I can install 2013-2018 seats into my 2012! It would be way easier to find newer, cleaner seats for my truck since I have the side airbags in my seats.

The only difference is the plugs from what I can gather.

A few pieces of info:

1.) The seat belt buckles on the 5th gens physcially work with the 4th gen seat belts, but do not remove the seat belt light. The fix - swap in the 4th gen seat belt buckles. The plug on the 5th gen seats are exactly the same.

2.) The airbags on the 5th gen seats work for the 4th gen SRS system. The plug needs re-pinned (i.e. remove the wires from the 5th gen connector and place in appropriate section on the 4th gen connector).

3.) The 5th gen seats have the HSM under the passenger seat. The 4th gen has the HSM under the drivers seat. I am going to use, in effect, the 4th gen HSM and logic, and connect to the seat heaters / coolers on the 5th gen. This will be a longer, slower process - as my truck did not have heated / cooled seats originally.

4.) 5th gen rear seats (top) vs. 4th gen rear seat (lower ) brackets:

Got the back seats installed! I was able to reuse the 4th gen seat brackets, and install the 5th gen seats 'into' the brackets. I had to make 1/2-in spacers to install - while the seat supports were generally the same shape, they necked down at the mounting points.

I also had to use the seat back brackets from the 4th gen; apparently the hooks are a bit different on the 5th gen. So I cut the welds, and bolted them though the 5th gen seats with Grade 8 hardware.

Otherwise, all works and looks good!
