I already have an upgraded VB.

This is the bulk of unreliability in the RFE. Yeah, yeah, OD clutches etc., but all the planetary gearsets are just fine, from what I've read.

I'd say with the VB done right you're fine. Along with removing the oil cooler line thermostat and regular oil changes, that is.

I miss my NAG1 in my 06' 300SRT8.
I had the AMG clutch packs and the Paramount Stage II VB put in mine with a little bump in terms of an upgraded TC... dang... it would lite up off the line with the Getrag 3.92 LSG upgraded diff.
The good ol' days...lol!
My 300 has the Nag 1 in it,the only thing i hate about it,is it's lack of off the line tire spinning torque with the factory 2.82's.I've seriously kicked around the idea of replacing it with the 8 speed, just for the torque multiplication you get with the 8 speeds 4.71:1 first gear,as i'm not swapping the 2.82's out,it gets to good of milege with them, lol.

Short answer is no,you can install a 2 wheel drive 8 speed though. The mainshafts are differant between 2X4 and 4X4 trans, and changing the mainshaft is a major under taking on the 8 speed. You could use the 4X4 trans if you had the transfer case, and just used the transfer case as an extension housing, but that's kind of counter productive

I've sure thought about it,lol. The car gets 30+mpg on the highway,so swapping the 2.82 gears isn't really an option, but it seriously lacks off the line tire spinning torque. It definitely doesn't launch like this one does, lol

It's fun as it p!$$es off 10 speed 5.0 Mustangs and stock 717 hp Hellcats at the track, lol. That was just a motor launch,at 5,000ft DA, i was at last summers Hemi shoot-out where the car went to the finals.I don't run it on the bottle bracket racing.I broke out,by 0.003 against a pro-built 9 sec bracket car in the final round, and i'm still kicking my ass over it,lol

Great runs and an experienced racer behind the wheel of a wicked vehicle!
One day I'll get back into the racing scene... so many hobbies, all expensive.
My latest hobby is firearms, and in 6 months I'm about $20K deep....lol
It never ends ;)

Question: Will a burnout kill the RFE??

Naaaah. Not the first time.
If it does, just rebuild it or go 8-spd :D

Yer getting 'internet-spooked'. They're not that weak. There's millions of them out on the road with a lot of miles on them. Abusing any tranny, though, unless it's built for HP, can lead to trouble. If you want your tk's tranny to last, drive like you do.

I still wonder what in hell Daimler/Benz was thinking when they re-purposed the RFE for the 5.7 trucks, they already had a pretty decent 5 speed in the Nag 1 that was in the parts bin. They knew enough to use the Nag 1 behind the 5.7's / 6.1's and 6.4's in the cars, but sure slipped up by not using it in the trucks

Only the RFE transmission is garbage Mike, lol. If they'd of used the same Nag 1 as they put in the cars, then they'd of had a decent 5 speed.Re-purposing a light duty transmission originally designed for the low horsepower early 4.7's was their biggest mistake, especially when they already had a decent 5 speed in the Nag 1 they could of used.
Probably the biggest reason is Mercedes was selling Chrysler the NAG1 (W5A580) at an exorbitant price and had locked in the supply based on cars. Plus the torque rating of 410 lb. ft. for the 65RFE was not that much less that the NAG1 (427 lb. ft.). I'm sure it was strictly a supply and price issue.

Just about every transmission I can think of has their problems and detractors, including the Mercedes built NAG1/W5A580, which has a reputation for being extremely fussy about transmission fluid, leaks, and easily overheated.

Dusty

But the Nag1's issues can be fixed, and with a Dings valve body will handle some serious power, and live. You can't rebuild an RFE to take any power,no matter what anybody tells you, lol. There's lots of Nag1's handling 600+ rwhp with nothing more then Troys valve body, and living on the track and street.
But i agree with your theory that Mercedes was bending Mopar over on the Nag1 costs

I don't know. I have a friend in the transmission repair/rebuild business and he says he can make a RFE into a very durable unit, and he claims he's never had one come back. Then again, he refuses to build for racing, says guys will still find a way to blow them up.

Question: wouldn't be easier to upgrade to a 66RFE if one was seeking a stronger unit without expensive durability upgrades?
