Hi all. I have a 14 Sport 149" with 42k and I have been having a problem with the transmission lately that is worrying me.
I bought the truck used when it had 32k on it and about 10 months later I would occasionally get a rev and clunk at the 2-3 shift. There would be a pause as if the trans was looking for 3rd gear, the engine would rev a bit, and then it would clunk into gear. This happens less than 20% of the time and only during gentle acceleration. Several times during the last 6 months the pause would be longer and the shift into 3 was accompanied by the check engine light. The light would only remain on for a day or so and then would go away. I checked the code and while I don't have the info in front of me it was about a difference in expected rotational speed into and out of the transmission in third gear. Once, after a long pause, the truck shifted into third and wouldn't shift out of third until I turned off the truck and started up again. Is this problem familiar to anyone?
Does it happen more when the trans is cold. If I had to answer this I would say yes, but my trans is always cold. I live in a small town on a small island and I can go days without driving more than 3-4 miles at a time between parking and turning the truck off, often my trips are under a mile. I also can go days without exceeding 40mph. As a matter of fact, in order to get to a speed limit over 45 I would have to put the truck on a boat for 45 minutes and then drive another 20. This only happens 3-4 times a year, as we take my wifes car for longer trips. This is also the reason I have not brought the truck to my local dealer when the check engine light was on to have them check it quickly, as local is kind of a misnomer when there is a boat ride between us. I called the dealer and was told several things it could be, everything from an internal mechanical problem to a solenoid to a flash update.
The main reason this is working me over so badly is that my truck was originally built for sale in Canada so it has no warranty at all. I found a third party warranty that can be cancelled for a full refund within 30 days with no claims made. I think I'm going to by it and get the truck checked, if its short money cancel the warranty and move on and if its big money this repair would cover a good percentage of the total cost of the warranty and make the extended warranty cost/benefit dice roll more likely to break in my favor.
So, does anyone know how serious my problem is? Am I likely to be stranded on the side of the road any time soon? Thanks in advance for any help here.

You should have the original 5 year, 100,000 mile OEM powertrain warranty. Sounds like you need a valve body or something maybe more expensive.

Sounds like an internal transmission problem, the symptoms described come up here often. The third gear is the limp in default. When a transmission fault is detected, it defaults to third gear and stays there so you can limp into a service station. It often clears with a restart. The fault that set the check engine indicator may be the one set, three good cycle reset type. So it takes three driving cycles without an active fault before the light resets.

Usually they swap the valve body, and if that doesn't work, then the transmission. There is likely an internal hydraulic leak somewhere. The transmission can adapt to it, but that often causes hard shifting, and there is a limit.

Default for the ZF 8 speed is actually 6th gear as fluid pressure is directed to the C, D and E clutches for default operation until the vehicle is shut off. If the vehicle is started and the fault remains there will be no engagement.

mvmatt, either check the fluid level yourself or have the dealer do it. The process can be a pain in the ass without a lift and some good heat resistant gloves.

I have a 2015 outdoorsman 4X4 with 33k and 3 times out of 5, I will hear a thunk sound I'm sure is from the tranny when I go to start up the truck. It happens when you turn the key from off to run position before engaging the starter. No trouble lights thou so I guess that's good but just started this so it's a bit concerning to say the least.. Anyone else have this??

Try to have someone else actuate the key while you listen under the hood. The electronic throttle body does a self cleaning actuation and test at key on that will produce an audible thunk that gets louder the more dirty the throttle body gets. Just a thought.

On occasions my zf8 speed seems like its still engaged when I start my truck. It jumps forward a little and I get a thump noise.

I have a 2018 blacked out crew cab, 5.7 with the 8 speed. Love the style and ride of the truck but would NEVER recommend ram to a friend. Bought new, 18,000 miles on it now and I’m extremely disappointed with it. Lifters started rapping away thousands of miles ago, and of course they are on a huge backorder.
About 3,000 miles ago the transmission started slipping on upshift when cold upon light throttle. Goes away when warmed up, but every morning I leave for work it does it again and slams into 3rd.
So regret my $50,000 decision and I will be looking at a Ford when I can unload this headache.
Almost all of my driving is highway, and I run full synthetic for engine oil. Coworkers have commented on how my truck sounds horrible as it starts and idles, and a buddy of mine was looking to replace his 20 year old Dakota. After hearing my truck and telling him about the transmission issue, he purchased a new F250.
The whole situation sickens me as I baby my truck.

Sounds like my truck

ECU Reflash
Valve body replacement
New transmission.
