So I've been accumulating parts for a little bit and I'm sure I'm in over my head. I have some experience with car audio but I got a good knock on the head in 2007 and have forgotten a lot of it. I'm going Kenwood head unit, alpine components in front with tweeter in sails, alpine coaxial in rear. Front and rear powered by a Rockford Fosgate amp. I will also be installing an alpine 10' sub with a kicker amp. Some kicker 3.5" speakers got thrown into the mix. Will I be able to power them off the head unit speaker wires if I'm running rca's to amps for the front and rear? 5ffae6d32bfe045e12593bb0e1618729.jpg

You should be able to power the 3.5's off the head unit. May want to contact Kenwood first though as there may be some setting you have to choose. My pioneer unit allows me to do that. As long as the Kickers are 4 ohm (which they likely are) you should be fine. The kenwood should get anywhere from 14-22 watts per speaker which is probably perfect.

Not to be critical, but your amps might be a little light on power for your gear. If you could exchange the sub for a dual 4 ohm, that would maximize the kicker amp. As it sits now, your kicker amp will be nearly at its full potential of 400 watts if you run that dual 2 sub in 4 ohm load. If you had a dual 4 ohm sub wired to 2 ohms, the kicker gain could be turned down which may prevent excessive heat/distortion. Then again, it will probably be awesome as is. I guess it also depends on your box; sealed or ported. Sealed would require more power than ported.

I think the issues with running the 3.5" off the head unit is the ability to "blend" them in to the rest of the system. I used test tones to calibrate my amps to max power and after balancing the system, the 3.5s are getting 4 to 5 watts rms.

I welcome all criticisms. Thanks for the replies. I'll try to see if it'll work and go from there. Maybe there's a setting if not. With the kicker amp, the certificate of tested rms was 950ish watts so I figured that sub would be a good match. They are both 2 ohms. All my other speakers are 4 ohm. The 4 ch Rockford amp can knock out 100 watts per channel at 4 ohm which seemed like a good match for the components and coaxials. I've already installed a new glassmat battery in my truck. I put the sub in a fox box last night and I have my wiring kit on the way and hopefully if everything goes as planned, I'll get started on it this weekend.

I couldn't tell which model the amps were, I was trying to match pictures. Cant wait to see install pics and get your impressions. I've heard very good things about the alpine type R speakers and subs.

Well, I got started on it at 3:40am on Saturday and was really unorganized but I made some progress.
19f087615e607220dc21b1d3b1a1fd08.jpg

First thing I did was pulled the back seats out to remove the storage bin lids and add the seat risers that fox acoustics sends with their enclosure. 897c71efbb028c900afc0eef39e47f21.jpg

The bolts were almost impossible to get out with a ratchet. Had to get out the big guns. 3d733eebb3289a049cf3071b3a0837b6.jpg

That's more like it! 87833e47f1b1a4c0240de9b60eff785e.jpg

Got it vacuumed up and added the seat risers.43638a484fca717335fb6a64676915bb.jpg

I even pulled out the front seats. Still not sure why, but I got to vacuum the carpet under it.
Then I got started on the stereo. b850053bd109c618821fc622a5fdae82.jpg
From the posts I've read, you just remove these and the dash comes off. Not so in my case! There was a bolt hidden behind the plastic around my outlet plug.

Used a 9/32 to get the 4 stereo bolts off and out she came. 1d320d9130ec97d4d3c96a5bcfe09f8e.jpg

Matched the plug to the new harness. 919e4fd42f179878e7dbd0fcba5e36ef.jpg
ab8bcc85ede835d7ddf8bd0ef6f2d73d.jpg

Got the wires soldered together and shrink wrapped. 9d368fc1b5f88ef1e930a7ef8a6ab59c.jpg
dbb373342da90fcfb788a7f20bb55156.jpg

And when I went back into my shop, there was something waiting for me at the door. fe5a97f08ecb78d390e78f374a5ef812.jpg

After that little scare, I hooked up the stereo just to make sure it was working properly.
3dc67b14ac60f2d0292846f8c4863c72.jpg
and yes it was!

After this I had to take my dog to the groomer and get breakfast with my fiancé so progress was hindered a little.

Upon my return, I hung a wire down through my dash and coming out the passenger side of the cup holder. That's my passing wire. I taped 3 sets of RCAs, amp control wire, reverse cam, usb and aux cord, and Bluetooth mic to the cable and pulled it through.
f2bc073f62ba91eaf02e27805d8c746d.jpg

Then I decided to place my Bluetooth mic next to my speedometer. So I took off the plastic under the steering wheel. 20c9730c81849223b4c147d88eb71476.jpg

And after some fishing, I got the mic up 28b685f00b6cd88d20bb3ac8f00f94c0.jpg

Then I got started on the stereo hole. Don't judge my order of operations. Lol I was so scattered. But luckily I had compressed air to make my life easier. I cut out the top of the metal bracket to open up room for that big double din. 6b0560f5ca6b8aab6499b33f5b54c681.jpg

39fa675130c5b0705e32cdb15dcb6999.jpg

Then I made cuts through the sides at the midway point. This is to allow the dash to spread open a little more to accommodate the double din. e02f78e3257309b59e8cf37ba82212d4.jpg

Then pulled of door panels. Plenty of instruction on this forum on how to do this.

Old vs new7ff70d32053081645729edff6cbf5607.jpg

The back door rubber grommet thing is a complete nightmare. There's about enough room in it for the wires that are already there. Lots of sweat and pain trying pass 14ga wire from one end to the other. I used a length from a clothes hanger. Stuck the hanger through and then duct taped my wire to the end and "finessed" it through. Biggest pain in the butt ever. 628adca568020faf922334a557aefc80.jpg took multiple tries on either side.

Then I ran into another pickle. Had nowhere to go with the wire! So I drilled a hole through the plastic of the rubber piece bolted to the door. 09d92718b2de3c56eee070cb7d72e80f.jpg
Finally able to solder and install the speakers! So glad to be done with that! 7de189f6e9b9e989e7ccb10018fc0c39.jpg

By this time I was completely dehydrated and lacking energy so I called it a day, got everything back together, and went to dinner. Only my front door and dash speakers are running but those new kickers are fantastic! Sorry for no pics on the 3.5's but I just got too anxious a few days prior and swapped them out real quick. There is plenty of info on here to explain swapping the 3.5's out. At dinner I started cramping in both hamstrings and calves. Drink water people! My shop was an oven. Will continue later. Amp kit next. Then installing the front door speakers and deciding how bad I want those tweeters in the sails. My inner laziness is getting to me. :p more to come later!

Thank you! Not bad for a day's worth of work. I also got the sub mounted in the box the day before and it fits snugly. fc4faf2d752c396e50281656bc20e95c.jpg

So you're going to keep the dash 3.5's powered from the HU, and just amp the rest of the doors?

So jealous of the impact lol. I had to do all the seat bolts with a ratchet!

Thanks, Michael. Yeah, I'm gonna try to run the 3.5's off the HU if it lets me. They are low power speakers and the HU I chose is one of the more powerful ones.

And holy crap, Mark! I tried two 3/8" impacts and they couldn't budge it and the big 1/2" one I used barely got it. The rear bolts on the front seats were even worse!

So I've got a little free time and I figure I'll start thinking of where I'm gonna run my amp wiring. And this seems like the best spot.

2 15mm bolts. This thing is a life saver. It's hell with a ratchet. 54138c8c360803d008315769e3c4a4f1.jpg
Piece out. Just need to drill a hole and put my wire fitting in it.

Stuck it in the vise and drilled through.

Next I cut my wire to put on my fitting.
0666103bbfb7c03bb45e15da5c711b04.jpg

Pressed it in the vise and hammered it with a whatever these are called. I'm drawing a blank.

Since I don't have a cool battery post piece, I just sandwiched my cable in between the current piece. e8efba80160a2fe7204117c856bab473.jpg
Ran the wire through the truck and behind the backseat where I put on a distribution block. 297f4b1fd3cf169f38d07aa7ef6eeca7.jpg
And I was missing the right fittings I needed for my grounds and it was already dark so I made due for now. Probably not a good idea long term.
867b8d7019db4da6c27ae9db73e1ad44.jpg

Hooked up the power, ground, and remote power, RCAs, and rear speaker wire and sub speaker wire. Still have to connect it to the sub, but that's for another day. I mainly just wanted to hook up my power and ground so I could connect my battery again and move my truck. It's still in pieces but I'll post more pics when I find some more time.

I just pulled them off, marked the spots and used a hole saw with my drill.

Didn't see an inline fuse off your power wire, did you install one? If not, just a suggestion but it's a good idea to have one within a foot or two from the battery on your power wire. I just ran my power wire tonight as well through the same cover plate, easy to do and very convenient placement of it. Just make sure you silicone around the hole to seal it up after running the wire through it and getting things hooked up :)

That's a great idea redram. I was leaning towards that but don't have the hole saw I need and wanted to explore other options. lol I'll just head to Home Depot sometime this week and buy one.

Thanks, Terrible. That's an awesome equipment list you have. I still wanted to be able to use one side of the underseat storage so I opted for the single enclosure. My amps have such a tiny footprint, I'm gonna mount them between the storage bins.

Mark, I do have a fuse on my power wire. It's a big one and I didn't know where to mount it. Slim pickings near the battery. I have it just sitting on top of the fuse panel. Definitely still need to silicone the cover plate.

Well I got to hear the rear speakers and the sub this morning before work. Great improvement. Needs tuning. And I can definitely tell it's one sub. I'm sure it'll sound much better once it's dialed in and broken in. Found a toolbox drawer full of hole saws so my tweeter dilemma is solved. Once I get some more time, I'll be back at it.
