Hey guys I wanted to share my latest experience with this lifted truck.
On my journey to restoring my enjoyment of driving this truck I decided the driveshaft was the latest item that needed attention. Now nothing was wrong or unbearable but with 150,000 miles it would only be a matter of time before it could be an issue.
I originally intended to just replace the U-joints and carrier bearing off my stock driveshaft. The problem was the nut holding the carrier bearing on the shaft. To save the next guy the socket you need is a 33mm axle nut in order to replace the carrier bearing.
To save a long story I ended up purchasing a brand new oem shaft.
Now I recommend also replacing the 2 bolt plate that holds the carrier bearing to the frame. That 2 bolt plate likes to rust on the bolts. If they break your drive shaft is gonna go flopping at the carrier bearing.
Now the gain for all the pain.
Mpg's are coming back. Zero vibration from he driveshaft area and is a probable cause for most lifted guys problems. The hard downshift to first are gone. Hard shifts in any gear are gone. Truck is great to drive again. Service manual says 75,000 and I doubled it. I won't make that mistake again.
Hope this will help anyone else looking to do this repair or replacement.
