For those running the exhaust cutouts how far away/close do you have them mounted to the y-pipe? I was talking to a guy and I told him I was thinking about going with a cutout and he said the closer to the y-pipe its mounted you would see more performance than mounting closer to the muffler. Any truth to that

in theory makes sense to me, the less pipe the gas has to go through the more flow, with a quicker exit?

I have seen some people say they feel better performance, and some say the opposite.

I have mine pretty much right after the cat and with it opened, I lose all low end torque vs it being closed and goin thru the flowmaster 44 I have dumped.

I have heard you mainly noticed a difference with the cutouts opened when you have lower gears.

What I'd like to do if possible is attach a section of 3" pipe to the cutout and have it dump right before the rear wheel

Can save yourself some money and just run a straight pipe for a day or two with it dumped to give you the idea of what its gonna sound like before ya drop $250-350 on a cut out and pipe.

The wife. I'd run straight pipes if I could. She not a fan of loud exhausts. My last truck (Cummins) had a 5" turbo back exhaust and she hated it b/c when I left for work that's all she would hear especially in the winter when I would let it idle and all my other trucks had cat back or muffler deletes. Looking for the best of both worlds

Wouldn't it sound a bit better if it ran through a little bit of pipe?

Just as a reference, here's how mine is. You can see the cutout as its the shiny part haha

If you (or anyone) get a chance could you take a quick video of how it sounds in the cab say from a stand still to about 35 mph and maybe cruising about 65 mph

I had an electric cut out on my truck for the same reasons as you. Best of both worlds. I lost too much low end torque and mpg to be worth it. I took it off after a month and now run an aftermarket chambered muffler. Sounds good and don't lose torque or mpg. I just ingore her when she *******.

In terms of putting the cut out before the muffler or right after the Y, the only difference you would see in terms of performance is losses due to pressure created by the friction of the exhaust moving down the pipe, so whether you dump it right after the y and then run 4 ft of pipe, or put the cutout just before the muffler makes no difference (except option 1 weighs more... lol).

And my girlfriend can feel your wifes pain with the straight piped diesel lol. Used to drive an 05 CTD, and one day I decided I would run a 5in exhaust. Got as far as right under passenger seat in the cab and ran out of time cuz some stuff came up, so I welded a turn down in place, and drove it around for 6 months. She could have killed me, but I loved the sound, just not after 2-3 hours of towing lol

Like said above, you wont notice any difference in performance whether you put it directly behind the y-pipe or directly in front of the muffler. Also, I have read many people here say that they lost tq with their cutout open. I was one of the first to run a cutout on my 03 back in the day, and at first, I thought the same thing. I dont know if it is the extra noise or what, but it did feel like I lost tq. Then I took the truck to the track and dropped .3 in the 1/4 mile with the cutout open. Then I took it to the dyno and gained 12hp/12tq with the cutout open vs being closed. The open exhaust is going to make more power than going through a full exhaust. Seat of the pants might trick you, but the dyno numbers and timeslips show the real truth.

I'm definitely interested in a cutout
where's the ideal location for it, middle ways between the y and muffler??

You can hear it really good with some ear plugs plugged into the computer:

This one I close it at 60mph and then re-open it:

And here it is from 0mph:
[excuse the rattling lol it was on a bumpy road and you can hear my drink]
