I'm heading into the 5th winter with my stock battery. Truck is a 2014 2500 6.4 Hemi. My climate is somewhat mild but it can get as cold as the teens in the winter. I haven't noticed any slow cranking or anything like that. Should I replace it as a precaution?

I live in a climate where we get 100ish in summer and 20s in winter. I replaced the battery in our 2014 journey because I had it tested and it said it was failing. I start to question them after the 3 year mark. I’ve had them fail at random times and it’s never at a good time. To me it’s not worth the risk of being stranded somewhere. You can take the truck to an auto parts store they’ll test it for you for free .

My 12’ still had the factory battery in it. And started just fine. You should be able to get at least 5-6yrs out of your original battery

I just replaced the factory battery in my 2014 with an AGM type as preventative maintenance.

We get to single digits every year here in NE Tn.
My 14 Ram battery lasted 3.5 years .

I wouldn't change it as a precaution , just keep some jumper cables in the truck and hope for the best [emoji1303]

Unless I am remote, I tend to run my vehicles until the battery actually goes bad. If I suspect a marginal battery, I have it load tested at one of the auto parts store and go from there in making a decision to replace.

In AZ. 2 years max for batteries here. Just replaced my 2016 with 40k last week. Slow start and kept resetting my radio every time I started. My mustang last 2 years but at least Ford covered that one.

Why do most OEM batteries last many, many years and then aftermarket gets significantly less?

In my '13 it went about four years to the dot. Just wouldn't hold a charge anymore. AutoZone said it was good, but I just went and got a Mopar Battery no issues up until I traded it in.

I have only had my '14 since April but the battery completely died last month and it has 47K miles on the truck.

Because the vehicle manufacturers can get both the quality and discount bulk pricing at the same time. Way cheaper for a battery manufacturer to ship by the pallet truck load to the vehicle manufacturing plant than to label and distribute retail to multiple store locations.

Also, when it comes to consumer retail battery sales, the market is driven by a "good, better and best" pricing and marketing strategy with many consumers buying cheaper and lesser quality batteries than would be supplied as OEM installed.

^^^^^^ this plus you never know how long that battery has been on the shelf at retail store or at the distribution center before it got sent to store.
