Hi all,

I have a 2015 Ram 1500 with 5.7 L engine. It has a short-bed truck and is a Crew Cab.

I need to pick up a load of 2,200 pounds of lead.

Looks like my max cargo capacity is about 1,700 pounds.

Does this max load sound right?

If I have no passengers in the vehicle, do you think I'd be OK 500 pounds overweight?

Yep open your driver door and on the inside door jamb you'll see a white sticker (at least mines white). It will tell you what your maximum payload is and I'm pretty sure it'll be well below 2200 lbs. A lot of 2500's are barely rated for 2200 lb payload. No way I would haul that much in my 1500.

I don't think this will work for him since he has a 2015. This site only provides this info for trucks that are 5 years old or newer.
5 years old and newer, that’s it? Lol Man that’s pretty lame. I guess the overhead is too much to keep a database of these numbers on their site.

Inside the door and with a crew cab, you are probably much closer to 1300 depending on options. Some are below 1000 lbs if all decked out.

The guys above are correct, you'll likely need to check your sticker in your door jam. It'll give you GVW, Payload, and Gross Axle ratings.

That said, if it's a short trip of just a few miles and you take it nice and slow, you might be okay. Risky, but okay. My grandpa used to load his 1500's up with feed for his pigs (a long box regular cab) so full it would sit on the bump stops, but he would drive less than 20 mph for about 4 miles, then unload it. He never broke anything but he was way overloaded.

If you need to get on a highway or go a long distance, I would rent or borrow a trailer.

I went and looked at the sicker but it listed GVR or something and that also includes the weight of the truck. I wasn't able to ferret out the actual cargo capacity but I got tired of tilting my head sideways to try and figure it out! :)

My wife's truck is at the body shop now (we got rear-ended over thanksgiving) so I'll take a look at the sticker and take a picture when we get it back.

I'll have a 4-hour interstate drive with this stuff so it sounds like a trailer is the way to go.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks I'll check when we get the truck back, but it did not look like that as I recall.

Gordo is that from your 3500?
No I just did a quick google search, the payload on my truck is 3990ish but they all look the same. I believe it's a standard sticker for the car industry.

Yeah - definitely get the trailer. That much weight in any half-ton truck would be squirrely, trying to run highway speeds for 4 hours would be dangerous.

There is a difference between "can" and "should". For instance, I was able to travel about 50 miles with my 2015 1500 5.7 loaded down with tile in the back. It was easily 2K lbs if not closer to 3K. Was riding on the bump stops, original suspension, the entire time. Took is slow but it was clearly not safe. I knew I would be replacing the shocks and struts soon anyway so wasn't too worried about damage. That being said, yes, it is possible but it is seriously not recommended nor safe. We all have our own tolerances as to what limits we'll try to push.

I agree with the statement above, rent a Uhaul trailer and you'll be fine.

Never will understand why people do not read the owners manuals/specs for their vehicles which are put there by the truck designers, instead they ask people who know less than they think they do
