Glad this came up.

I have 55+k miles on my stock engine. Hose is clean as a whistle.

No oil stains on the filter when I replaced it less than 1000 miles ago.

Am I lucky?

You'd have real serious issues if you had oil on the air filter, the air filter is "not" connected to the PCV except for a make up air inlet. That tube off the airbox is a clean air supply so the PCV system doesn't suck dirty air into the crankcase. You have to feed the vacumn created by the PCV system with clean air,or else you'll destroy the seals in the engine. To check if you're sucking in a pile of oily crap from the crankcase, through the PCV system you'll have to pull the intake tube off the throttle body, then lean in and manually open the throttle blade and check the backside of it , and also down inside the intake manifold for crud.Do this with the engine off.
