How can I tell the difference? Just recently it has started a "tick" when it is started. It seems to go away after 30 seconds or so. It's a 2012 5.7. Approaching 60k miles

I don't hear it other than start up.

Thanks in advance

Sounds like a broken bolt. I hope yours doesn’t turn out like a nightmare like mine

Best "guess" from what you have said is exhaust leak. A simple way to check. On the passenger side, put a socket and ratchet on each of the exhaust manifold bolts. If you can turn the bolts "easily" or they are missing, you found the problem. If all of the manifold bolts are tight, check the other side. More difficult to get to those bolts. Another simpler test is to pick a cold morning and time how long it takes for the tick to stop. If the tick stops on a warm morning faster versus longer on a cold morning. Good indication that it is exhaust leak. If it is a valve train tick, as said, it will go away quickly.
