ESPs are not for everybody. My previous vehicles were older and simpler (and I was younger) so I did all the work myself. The savings in labor costs made it a no-brainer to go it alone without an ESP.
I had the first year of an "all-new" generation so knew I was going to be in for more growing pains than most. Couple that with 25k+ miles per year (basic warranty expired at 18 months) and it was a slam dunk in my book to get the ESP.
In the end I had around 11 dealership visits total IIRC for warranty work in the 4 years I had it (bought it new). The last 2-3 were under the ESP so I got my money's worth out of it, especially with the pro-rated refund. YMMV
