Just bought a nice 06 long bed regular cab 4x4, new to Mopar trucks ,do I have MDS? and why does the manual recommend 89 octane but accept 87 octane?

I do believe that they started incorporating MDS in 2006. The truck is tuned to run on 89 octane for best performance. You can run 87 octane but power output will be down a little and possibly fuel economy. If running 87 octane the ECM will pull timing when it detects knock. If you tow with it I would recommend running 89 octane.

Congrats on the truck and welcome..

Thanks, I will be towing a light landscape trailer everyday nothinbg heavey just lawn equipment so I hope 87 octane works out. Is there anything under the hood or on the dash that visually will tell if I have MDS?

The MDS is standard in the 5.7-liter, Hemi Dodge Charger R/T, Durango, Magnum R/T and Ram 1500. Chrysler claims its MDS results in a 20 percent fuel economy improvement.
