Hello All,

Have been experiencing an oil leak coming from some type of filter housing (attached photo) underneath my 2016 Dodge Ram 1500.

From reading and researching it seems the most common oil leak is from the filter housing.

Based on the photo and where the leak is coming from, any suggestions on why it might be leaking from that area and how to mitigate the issue?

Appreciate all the help I can receive!

My 2016 1500 has also done this, off and on, for 4 years. All oil changes done by dealer. Mopar filters, screwed in tight. They can't figure why. Said the housing is OK. Last oil change 6 months ago (But only 3000 miles) and has been dry until a couple days ago, now it's spotting the driveway, and the filter is wet again. It's going back in a two weeks for it's next scheduled change, and I'll have them look at it - again! FWIW, this has been my only issue with this truck in almost 7 years and 65,500 miles.

If your Ram has the 3.6 Pentastar (you have 3.7 so I am not sure if you mean 3.6 or 5.7) the oil filter housing on the top of your engine is plastic. They have a high failure rate as the housing either cracks or the seals on the bottom start leaking. Oil then runs down the back of your engine and down the bell housing and soaks the trans like in your picture. Pull the engine cover off the top of your motor and shine a flashlight down into the intake valley by your filter. If it is full of oil that is your issue.

Mine is the same year with 48k miles. Same leak. Oil filter housing was the issue. Thankfully I got it replaced yesterday under the extended warranty. Ram is still using the same plastic version as a replacement which baffles me.

Dorman makes an Aluminum housing for the 3.6. I am tempted to get one the next time I have to replace the one on our Jeep.

Ok, woah. Looking at your wording, you're not saying that it is engine oil, you're asking what is leaking. Correct?

So, the item pictured is your transmission and pan for it. Can you see any color in the fluid that's leaking? Black/brown/amber or possibly a greenish tint?

First thing I'd do is hose the area down clean, then watch closely to see exactly where it's leaking. Proceed from there.
