Overinflate for speed or no?

I've read a few websites where folks indicate you could/should add 10 psi above inflation if you may be exceeding 65 mph.

I'm sure this is not applicable to every trailer/tire combo ever made, and certain reductions in load may be applicable,,,, but I am of the impression that you do not inflate any tire more than perhaps a few pounds past max listed on the sidewall. (Preferably observe 'max. when cold' --- no more)

Thoughts?

I would say not. As a tire goes faster the only thing it's going to do is heat up as it heats up it'll cause the pressure in the tire to go up. If anything under inflate by 5psi or so that's just my head trying to be logical... Doesn't always work.

Don't do this. Tires get hotter as you increase speed, which in turn increased the PSI of the air pressure. If you inflate them 10 psi over, and then start rolling around at highway speeds, you could very easily blow a tire.

The recommended tire pressure from the tire manufacturer is determined from multiple tests. The tests they do regarding psi determine what pressure it takes to have the best balance of safety, mpgs and performance. Going 10 psi above that is going to have negative effects on handling, tire wear and mpgs imo.

Don't over inflate the tires, and especially do not under-inflate either. An under-inflated tires will quickly over heat due to the increased friction. Use the recommend tire pressure the manufature recommends. the proper way to check tire pressure is in the morning when the tires are at ambient temperature.

I looked a little deeper,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, (Like I should have previously)

The 'inflating 10 psi over' was hamstrung with 'above the recommended pressure based on the trailer placard for normal inflation and load conditions'

http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires/goodyear/Marathon_Special_Trailer_Applications.pdf

Perhaps there are cases where the placard recommends a lower than max pressure that could allow you to add 10 psi and still be at / below max tire pressure,,, but,,, I can see where this might cause confusion/malfunction if the placard is already at max tire pressure... and the 'inflation specialist' references only the Service Bulliten / trailer placard,,,.

Many places tell you to run max cold pressure on trailer tires all the time, which is what I aim to do regardless of the placard.

My dinky little single axle 5 X 9 'Northern Tool' trailer has the dreaded 'tiny 12's'. I added aftermarket wheels and 10 ply radials. 80 psi max. (Still kicking myself for not going with a larger wheel.,,,)

Even with the 12's, I have far more tire than trailer by the numbers, but I have a hard time keeping it at 65...

Please define "hard time keeping at 65".

As stated above. I go max cold air pressure. Camper tires are 50 psi max, so that's what I run them at. Just check at home before we leave and inflate if necessary.

Well,,, It's not about handling/tracking, trailer capacity vs. load, or with the tow vehicle not having enough power / stability to achieve/maintain 65+,,,

Personally, I believe it's due to posted speed limits well in excess of 65 combined with a loose nut behind the wheel,,,,

I'm thinkin a loud *** muffler might do the trick,,, Eliminates the 'serenity' factor at any speed above 45,,,

My thoughts, make sure that your "cold" inflation pressure is applicable for the time of year. The rest will take care of itself. Just check the pressure in the coolest part of an average day, before the sun hits it. If you find a tire low, Say 4#, just inflate the tire 4# above the reading when you are airing it up.
