Push Notifications

I believe I asked this question somewhere on the forum but cannot find it now. What does the term Push Notifications mean at the bottom of the page? Text says the forum wants my permission to enable them.

If enabled the forum will push any of the notifications you have set up on the forum to your phone/computer. It's like a text message but doesn't involve the text messaging service on your phone/computer.

Could you give me an example of what notifications might/could be set up. Thank you.
