Should I go ahead and change oil before 2000 mile trip, or wait

Just a quick question, I have almost 3000 miles on current OCI using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W20 with Royal Purple 10-48 filter. Usually I stick to about 4000 mile OCI. I know PUP and the RP filter is rated to go longer than 5000 miles. Should I change it now, or wait until I get back?

IMHO, 4k with synthetic oil and a quality filter is a waste of money. 6k seems (to me) like a less extreme OCI.

So no, I would not change the oil before the trip.

I run PUP 5W30 in both our Jeep Wranger and my truck and change it 6000 miles or 1 year.

4000 mile intervals is unnecessary but it is your money.

I did my first change at just over 6k. With the right oil and filter it is just a waste to change every 3 or 4K as old school taught us. Although I wouldn't be comfortable at 10k as some RAM paperwork states.

I don't think there's technically anything wrong with doing it at that interval the first time. If there was, they would probably say so in the owner's manual.

With that said, I'm going to change mine at 3k with conventional PYB, then PUP at 6k. It doesn't hurt to do a shorter interval, and there may be some benefit since there should be increased wear in the beginning.

If your running a full synthetic and doing a lot of freeway driving, I wouldn't consider changing until at least 7500 miles

FWIW, I run my synthetic filled vehicles to 8500 or 1 year. My OCI is showing about 10% left and I have gone around 7500 miles so far. Seems about right if it's to be trusted. The owners manual lists 10k with regular oil as acceptable which is a bit loco to me.

I change mine at 500, then again at 6k. Personally, I'd change it before a 2k mile trip. Though, just personal preference.

I think I see where the confusion is. My truck has 33,000 miles on it already, way past the break-in period. I'd agree though first interval change at 500 miles and definitely before a long trip during break-in. Just rolled 3K miles on this oil change interval and should be under 5K by the time we get back. I'll just change it then. Seems safe enough based on the general consensus. Thanks

If it was my truck and it only had 3k on the current oil, I'd drive to Florida twice and then some before I considered changing oil. 7k - 8,500 seems about the norm for a lot of people on here, at 4k you're wasting money by throwing away perfectly good oil.

Use the “oil life” meter in the EVIC.
