What he said!

As an experiment, I am running my current oil on the 6.4 with a 5W-30 oil and am so far 3500+ miles in on it. Nothing unusual to report as of this writing and nothing on the butt dynometer to tell me otherwise. Will do a UOA at 5K miles just to see where things are at.

For the record, I do not endorse anybody deviating from the owners manual recommendations of using 0W-40 as I am assuming all risks for this experiment.

There shouldn't be an issue IF you stay within the temperature parameters for 5w30.

But really on the high end of the temperature range 0w and 5w are the same - see the chart.
Motor Oil Viscosity - Advice / ELF

For the 30W you should not have any issues if you stay below the 30 degrees C.

For myself I will be staying with the Ow-40.

Do you have an engine block heater? I think that is an oil experiment you would/should do.

Test oil using a block heater and then test oil without using a block heater.

It would be interesting to know if there is less engine wear with a block heater.

Hoot: if you were running the SRT 0W-40.
There is a good chance the 5W-30 that you are running now has a more Robust additive package compared to the SRT 0W-40. It is one of the weakest of the 0W-40 group. Only thing it has going for it is the Moly. It has shown through a few posted UOA to shear fairly quick. **** before it is even poured in it is boarder line 30Wt.

This might be a different case if your Ram Truck 6.4L was only used for daily casual driving & never really worked hard. The SRT 0W-40 might stay in grade for much longer (Might). If towing heavy & often well that changes many things.

Is it just the Cam & Timing that is different between the Ram 6.4L & the Challenger/Charger 6.4L motor?

Found some of it:

New for 2014 was a specially designed 6.4 liter Hemi V8 specially created for heavy duty Ram trucks. Despite the identical size, they are very unlike the 6.4 liter SRT Hemis, rated 470 hp and 470 lb-ft.

The engine was redesigned for durability, torque, and economy with heavy loads; it runs on 89 octane gas and is matched to a six-speed automatic transmission only.

For trucks, durability and a broad torque curve take priority over horsepower, so (taking cues from Mopar engines of the distant past) the designers used sodium-filled exhaust valves and tougher valve seat materials, with aircraft-grade stainless steel exhaust gaskets and fasteners, and oil jets for cooling the pistons. A high-volume oil cooler and revised PCV system increase oil efficiency, while computational fluid dynamics optimized the cooling circuit.

Maybe this motor is just naturally harder on the oil? I honesty can't see that being the case. Maybe Ram is actually acknowledging the importance of Film Strength? Hmmm!

M1 FS 0W-40 is supposedly in the same boat it seems. Since it is supposedly produced using the (GTL) process as well. Which makes its base oil much thinner then the past versions. Good thing is the additive package is still strong.

Good point. I am not really trying to prove anything other than my own satisfaction that running 5W-30 on occasion is not going to hurt anything.

Given the video of the RAM brand manager and Chief Engineer saying that all reliability testing was done with 5W-30 in the 6.4, I am just trying to give a real world data point for it.

I have close to 100 quarts of PUP 0W-40 bought last year on clearance from AutoZone and will be using that up primarily but may sprinkle a oil change or two with 5W-30.

I understand! There is no reason to prove anything to anyone within these walls.

Hope your results are positive! I'm sure they will be you defiantly aren't pouring in a lesser quality product.

Honestly there is nothing scientific to consider with your idea. Pour it in and run it.

Now if you was thinking of pouring in let's say ---->5W-40 / 15W-40 / 5W-50 /15W-50 / 20W-50 / 10W-60 ----> This would have some interesting science behind it.

Lucky you I just got regular platinum

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Really I just asked Gena for this and she sent it out. Very excited. I used PUP once but never tested it then went to Redline which I'll run until it reaches 10k as planned. Then test time!!!!

Looks like you need at least one more , maybe they have PUP available where you are , you could probably ask Gena for it .
I requested 8 qts of 5W-30 PUP , just so I'd have one to top off if needed during the OCI .

Better Late Than Never

Wow I can't believe it, but just got a pm from Gina at Pennzoil and I'm in!!!
I just knew I was going to be to late as I've been unable to get on the net for over a week now. I'll be anxious to see if my Hemi likes 5/30 PUP. And we'll have more uoa's in this great thread!!

I'm thrilled a lot of you took advantage of this program that the Pennzoil Team offered within BITOG. Thank you to Gena for honoring my request & visiting this thread once more & offering it personally! Very Honerable & Classy Lady!

I was afraid most of you would just ignore the program since I was the One who brought it into this thread. I debated on just leaving it within BITOG! Even though PUP is like Bigfoot--->I figured this would be a good chance for those who wish to run it for the first time!

I deeply hope PUP meets everyone's expectations & needs!
Once again Congrats to those who took advantage of this very unique program.

I look foreword to hearing about all the results both Positive or Negative.

I thank you Syn , you Sir brought this here from Bob Is The Oil Guy aka " bitog" awesome forum!

I am looking fwd to participating in the PENZOIL UOA program !

I will say I am terribly committed to Redline oils and additives. ...
I've used Redline since I was a kid .... I will participate in this program and I will submit the findings here completely unbiased.

I like Redline for the gear and tranny applications. But, if I can get lower wear and my tick stays away and I can get it cheaper, I will gladly stay with PUP.
