BE VERY CAREFUL with the thermostat housing bolts...they like to break off in the intake...and dont forget to burp the cooling system really good when you're done!

Sure...it's really easy if ya got a set of ramps or somewhere where you can park the nose of the truck up on an incline. the idea is to get the radiator sitting higher than the engine and heater core.

Get the truck up on an incline, let it cool down...open the radiator cap and pull it off. Turn the truck on and let the tstat cycle open and closed a couple times...any air in the system will find its way out the water neck on the radiator...you might have to add a little more coolant after it burps as the level might go down.

Here's a guide for the 4th gens, but step 6 is how to burp it, and it's pretty much the same thing.

EDIT: I like SmokedRam's better though!

I'd say it's closer to 180...160 being the mark after 130.

Probably about right if you're running a 180 stat. Does the temp go up slightly in stop and go driving in these gdss awful temps we're having? I wish my ram ran that cool Got up to the "2" in 210 today with a 180 stat. But it was 105 degrees at 5 pm.

Overheating from an open t-stat usually occurs at higher steady speed driving because the coolant doesn't have time to stay in the radiator long enough to cool.

Mileage wise you probably won't notice much of a change with a hotter stat. What you might notice with the SCT you run is a bit more pinging at WOT even with a mild tune. Running engines to the point of meltdown is wonderful for emissions burn off.

Guys who move thier IATs into CAI tubes or buy those stupid ebay "resistor boxes" will likely kill mileage quicker.

no it doesnt fluctuate to much, it moved a little closer to 210 after a while
driving but not a ton. maybe it runs cooler b/c of the Hughes FI gap?? and my stat isn't failing..?

I'd say your stat is fine.

Now if it oveheats while driving for a long period at a steady speed, or "spikes" while warming up and then goes back to normal, that might be an issue.

well I drove it during winter/spring and the only time it would get past 130-140 was on my hour long trip to where I was going to school. idk if that's bad or good...

when it was 130-140ish (guesstimating) during the winter/spring I was getting 14.5 mpg with 85% highway miles. that's pretty good as far as I know for 2nd gens. about 10-12 now with mostly city.

130 ish is bit low. I would think that would set off a CEL.

You don't have one of those "fail safe" stats do you?

its the same one that came with the truck off the dealership lot.

Has it ran this low the entire time? Like from the time you bought it?

Maybe the problem is linked. Maybe your truck is sensing the colder coolant and engine temp from the open thermostat and adding fuel to compensate, resulting in a carbon buildup on your O2 sensors and causing them to fail... Hmmmm.

Someone else mentioned this...

X2...the PCM is just gonna adjust your air/fuel ratio and make it could start to burn rich...enough of burning rich = valve problems, catalytic converter problems...etc over time. That's only if you're running too cool for the engine to go into open loop.

Just spitballin here...
