Can't compete with the Pillbillies on the **** front. Market's flooded right now. Converted the truck bed camper into a mobile office/workshop and gave the rear bunkhouse in the TT back to the kid. The piggyback also doubles as a "You guys have fun, Daddy'll be back in a couple days" vehicle.

"Oh, sweet debt. Thy name is Truck."

I thought the truck camper would be for the mother-in-law. Even that would be to close for me.

34.5’ Prime Time Fury! Guessing just over 10,100! (GVWR is 9785)

Added Air Lift 5000 Ultimates after first tow! Also readjusted the Equilizer WD! Towed well before, just a hint of porpoising! Never alarmed me!

Hoping to get another trip or two before the snow flies!

The 6.4 LOVES the fuel on 4.10 gears!

My 1989 Layton TT is 6k gross and we try to get out with it at least Once per month in the camping season. Just got back from a long weekend with it yesterday. (Winterized it since we are done for the yrar) I average between 9 and 11 mpg towing.

I also have a 6'4"x12 NNT utility trailer for hauling stuff. The truck tows both very well. Going to Knoebels in Elysburg there is a 12% grade coming out of a small town. She gets down into 3rd gear on that one and 4k+ rpm...but man once there she pulls like a freight train. I have to back out of it to slow down, then get back into it. It pulls very well and I love this truck.

BUT, I have one of these on order. Pulling it home from OK will be the real litmus test for the 6.4.

I hate to say it but I think your going to need a diesel for that new trailer. The 6.4 will tow it but it will have to work really hard in the mountains.

I am with you 100%, but I feel like I have to give it a fair shot before kicking it to the curb. This was not in the plans when I chose the gasser. I hope they reveal the new HDs soon to see if the non-EGR emissions strategy is coming. My last truck was a 3500 SRW Cummins, so returning to that effortless towing performance will be like slipping on an old pair of boots. The exhaust brake will be icing on the cake.

I'd do the same thing- give the 6.4 a chance.

38’ TT, about 12k total. Rows great, works hard sometimes, but it really does well. About 9-11MPG depending on grade and winds

Well, I am back from Oklahoma with my Sundowner. The good news is the chassis with 30 psi in the Airlift bags handled the weight with absolutely no problem. No bucking, no chucking, no hobbie-horseing whatsoever. Absolutely calm going down the road. Did over 900 miles Thursday.

The less than good news is, as I feared, the 6.4/66RFE will do it under protest, but are not up to this task. This trailer is just under 12K absolutely empty. On flat ground and lower elevation, cruise set at 65, it would pull 5th gear , around 22-2300 rpm, reasonably well, sometimes 4th at around 27-2800. Add some elevation, and/or a little more roll to the hills, and 3rd at close to 4000 rpm. More elevation and steeper pulls by Albuquerque and south of Flagstaff and just too much time in 2nd gear spinning 5000 rpm for miles. To its credit, speed would drop off to 60, and she would hold it. Engine braking on steep downgrades was not very effective with this much weight. None of these were "legendary" grades, either.

MPG was mostly in the 7.5-7.9 range, which is pretty much what I expected. Couple that with the too small tank, with no aftermarket solution, and the range simply sucks. Hard to milk 200 miles out of it. Spent way too much time searching RV accessible fuel stops while driving. The chassis-cab with 74 gallons on board would be much, much better.

My Winter use will be mostly dune and desert destinations, so she'll get the job done, but I will have to go back to a Cummins for the locomotive torque, and the peace of mind of the exhaust brake.

Before anybody gets their panties in a bunch, I am not bashing the 6.4. These are my findings as someone who has towed a fair amount. Also, this trailer was not in the cards when I bought this truck. Life happens.
