I'm building a property soon and am looking to buy an rv to live-in during the construction. I have a 1500 5.7 with 3.21 4wd which tows 7990 as per the manual. Ive got timbres rubber springs too. I'm looking at getting a coachmen 36ft (total length) 7000lb dry. I'll be putting a good wdh and I have the factory brake controller. Any minor sub $1000 mods I can add to make this a tolerable towing experience?
We won't be pulling this trailer very often or very far. I'm thinking either bilstein 5100s and the hellwig sway bar or a set or LTs.

Dry weight is 7000lbs? You will be closer to 8000 empty and way overloaded for that truck. Given your circumstances I don't want to tell you to do it but pretty sure short infrequent tows won't be much of a problem. Large hills won't be fun.
My son has a TT that is about 32' overall with a dry weight of 6600lbs and we weighed it at 8100lbs loaded (tanks empty). I towed it 400 miles with my 2015 1500 5.7 3.55's. It towed it fine but that motor was working hard on slight highway grades. Turning about 4000 RPM for up to a mile at a time. We had 1000lbs tongue weight too.

I think realistically it will be 7600 or 7800lb when hitched up. The tongue wt and hitch will be 1000lbs which leaves 360lb left for payload. It "should" work, and it'll be temporary. I went ahead and got the bilstein 5100. I will do the LT when the factory sra bites the dust. Its about 50% left and id hate to waste money and add to landfill throwing away tires that still has another season left. The hellwig sway i think is more popular with guys that lower their trucks and probably are involved in some spirited driving.

Your 1000lb TW guesstimate should be pretty close give or take. You will definitely be pushing the limits of your truck as per specs. But like I said, as long as you have the WDH set up correctly and aren't towing every weekend or long trips you should be ok. Get it all hooked up and head to a CAT scale. You will need to weigh the truck by itself then weigh it all hooked up and loaded as you would be on your trips. This will tell you for sure if you are within your limits.
The upgrades might make it feel better and more comfortable but don't change any of your limits.

Heaviest trailer I have towed is my 8.5x20' TA Cargo Trailer. Gross combined weight was approx. 14,200 pounds.IMG_4882.jpg

Is that a 1500? I've got a 22 on order with 3.92 rear end gears. If I pull my dually it'll be around 13,000 lbs. I'm new to RAM.
1500 pulling 13K, ahhhhh, U may wanna think on that. 2500-3500 territory there and prob Cummins.

I definitely meant 12,000, sorry. That would be max. I did research and the hemi plus 3.92 should pull around 12750. I don't expect to tow it often, but if I do it'll be 3 hours trips. I wanted a truck that was enough truxk when I needed it, where the 2500 would be too much truck moat of the time. Sounds confusing when I type it out, lol

Yeah, highly unlikely that 1500 is legal or safe towing 12,000. Maybe with a gooseneck trailer but anything else and I can almost guarantee you you re way over on GRAWR and definitely on GVWR. Heck, I think my 2500 with 4.10's and 6.4 would probably struggle to tow 12,000. Never tried it and wouldn't be afraid to with my truck just think it would be pushing hard.

I'm new to Ram and full sized trucks in general. I've had a colorado for 11 years. I take it manufactures numbers are wrong?

Yeah it’s a 1500 with 3.92s. It handled the weight with no issues but any heavier I would be looking for a 2500 at a minimum. My trailer ended up weighing about 8300 pounds with everything in it.

When I was shopping for a "new-to-me" truck, the dealership kept trying to push a 1500 on me, assuring me that it can tow over 10K easily... I said naw, anything above 8K I'd want at least a 2500. Ended up leaving and buying a used 2016 2500 and haven't looked back.
