My 2019 1500 Tradesman with 37,000 miles just dropped the passenger front brake pad. Took it to AutoNation Arapahoe in the Denver area about a mile away. The caliper failed. So 2 front calipers, 2 rotors and the pads are quoted at $1700. Am I out of touch or is this really what they charge these days?

Get everything you need online and do it yourself for a fraction. I only paid 260 for pads and rotors from Powerstop brand (on Amazon) and I am sure the calipers wouldn't be too bad. Would probably take a couple of hours to do the work.

Friend of mine bought a used Bently. Took it in for a brake job which cost $1,000 per wheel. Pretty spendy.

37k miles and you need 2 calipers and 2 rotors? kinda doubt it. Learn how to do this shat yourself man, unless you have a bunch of money to pay out. Even with those parts needed that is very steep, find some other places to get quotes. if you towed it there then they will milk you.

I have a 2500 and had to replace all 4 pads and rotors at 20,000 miles and mine was only $600-ish and 2500 stuff is way more pricey but I did the work myself so no labor. My step-son replaced hid pads and rotors on his 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 with powerstop slotted rotors and that was only about $500

The day I drove my 12 off the lot (not quite 2 months ago) both front calipers locked up before I got home. Replacements were $76/ea. According to the Carfax the PO had taken it somewhere for brakes and rotors all the way around about 5k before he traded it away. They were still fine, I replaced the calipers and so far so good. I went back to the car lot on the way back to take back the cores to the parts house and they xeroxed the reciept and cut me a check.

i drove my 2009 Ram until it had 100,000 miles on it
then it was time to replace the shocks & although it did not really need it, i replaced the brake pads & had the rotors turned

Something doesn’t sound right. I’d expect @600-700

Mine was cause the rotors were all pitted at 12,000 miles. Ram said they were only under warranty for the first 12,000 so I just missed the cutoff. Had a bad pulsing like a warped rotor

Almost 90 K on mine still have life in them, but that's due to the environment you drive in. Very dry here, they use cinders, for the few snows we get. Back in the upper midwest, with the salt, lucky to get 60-70 K, before they rust and fall off. $1700 seems way high for just 2 brake job.

Most shop rate around here are $100 to $150 hr. Even at those rates my chevy 3500 which has rear drums was only $800 oem part replacement as well. I know your replacing the calipers but still maybe $1000 top with premo parts. I would call another shop most will give you a price over the phone for brakes. I am guessing the shop might be too busy and pricing **** high or trying to rake in the covid supply shortage money.

I took my 2009 Dodge Ram to a local Brake & Alignment shop
It is one of those shops where many automotive enthusiasts take their Hot Rods & Classic vehicles.

Just like i don't trust the dealerships to rotate & balance tires, i don't trust them with brakes or batteries either

Don't see why rotors would need replacing unless they are warped. They can be turned if they need resurfaced. And calipers can be rebuilt unless damaged. Pads get worn and need replaced, but with that low of miles, that should be about all that needs done. Do it yourself for the cost of pads.

Going back to the OPs question. Yes, you are out of touch with todays dealership pricing. They have a ton of demand going on right now so they know they can up their prices, even in the service area. Combine that with people who think they absolutely need to take their vehicle to the dealer service center and bam, $1700 for the work.

Now I’m not justifying it. Just answering your question. I would personally take it to a reputable mechanic not associated with the dealership since it’s out of warranty on the brakes. Only time I go to the dealership is for warranty work.

Good luck with the fix.

You are paying dealership prices!!! go to a local shop or even a tire store. Or get a repair manual and do it yourself. You can gravity drain the brakes and have your wife/son or helper help you finish the bleeding. Front brakes are not hard at all. You can even youtube it if you want to. Most rotors are now so cheep it is easier just to replace them then to find a shop that will turn them.

After thinking about this ...... You have a 2021 with 37k on it correct? Did you get it new and if so where from? If it is AutoNation have you taken it there for any service? I am asking this as you are just out of warranty. I know brakes are a different warranty schedule issue but the calipers should of had a 3/36. You could ask the service manager to do a good will claim with you. That is where you pay a deductible and they will cover it as a warranty item. You would still have to pay for the pads and they will only fix/replace the faulty caliper.

I was 1k for rear pads, rotors and calipers last month when a rear caliper seized and I was away from home in a hotel so having a shop do it was really the only option. I'd expect that much for a 4 wheel brake job, but not 2 and part prices here in Canada are a lot higher than in the US. Granted I just used Napa premium parts, but the rotors are at least coated for the salt. If I don't lube the slide pins every 6 months or less I'm lucky to get 25k miles out of the rears, but easily get double that on the front consistently. Both my Ram 1500s I've done the fronts half as often. When a caliper seizes the brakes are done pretty quick if you don't notice right away.

Yep, $1,700 is outrageous!! Last summer my son had rotors, calipers and pads redone on his S Class Mercedes at a DEALER. Total bill was $1,300 and he complained about that.
