Ok so I just hit 40k miles and I've been averaging 8500 miles on oil change according to the cluster. This time the light came on at 4200 miles. Any ideas?

Just clear it, 8500 is about perfect. Make sure it isn't dark on the dipstick and oil level full. Maybe just change your filter, cut it open.

Kinda what I was thinking too. I use Mobil 1 full synthetic so I know the oil hasn't broke down and degraded yet, but still curious to know why the light came on so early this time.

If your oil pressures are good, I wouldn't waste a thought on it.

I agree with Burla! I am curious though-->This OCI have you done alot of cold weather idling? Has your driving habits changed any from what has been {normal}? -->where you were allowed to go 8K miles between your OCI...

High RPMs/Towing/Alot of short trips {On & Off}?

I have read where these Ram OLM just don't go off of mileage... There are a few more algorithms {that might be misspelled} they look at...

They started using the OLM (oil life monitor) in 2014 I think... In years before that it was not an algorithm and was basically just a mileage timer.

^^^ if that's true then how come it doesn't go off at exact mileage every time?

I don't know either. I am have been trying to figure out since I got my Ram it seems like it is around 3000-3500. My understanding of the older ones pre 2014 is they don't have an advanced algorithm like you would see in many GM vehicles with percentage etc until 2014. Maybe someone else here has more detail on this.

I change my redline after about 9k miles of use. I do have to add about a quart of oil every 3 months or so... no idea where it goes, but it just does, and i accepted the thought of adding oil. No leaks can be found. catch can does collect lots of oil, but not as much as i have to add... In my last Oil Report from blackstone labs, they they said 9k is all good and told me to try to do 11k oil change next time , but i don't think i will be pushing that long...

oh yea, and my 2013 "oil change monitor warning" just goes off by the number of miles. i just reset it when it comes up as it's annoying...

What does the owners manual say on oil changes? I did my first oil change today at 5200 miles.

I just checked my Oil Monitor, shows 97% after almost 5,000 miles. I don't think that's right. Somehow must have got reset or something. It was working before.

I was told by my dealer j had to have mine changed every 3k and my oil life reader was still at 85% or better every time I just figured the oil reader was wrong

Stacey: Dumping any oil @ the 3K mile mark these days is ridiculous @ wasting your hard earned $$$... The dealer is pushing the 3K due to more $$$ for them...

Your dealer can not void your warranty as long as your following your OLM... Which I have never heard of one doing anyway... Never less due too wrong oil brand or viscosity...

Do you do your own oil changes?
PYB has shown through UOA to have plenty of TBN left even after 5K miles...

When I bought my truck it came with 4 free oil changes and I took it in at 5500 miles the first time and was told it HAD to be every 3000 miles. So I just took it in every 3000 but I don't see the point to drive a hour to get my oil changed so I just do it myself now. I usually do it every 5000-7000 miles depending on how cold it is and how be been driving

Yep it is a little weird waiting so long to change oil when you have been brainwashed into thinking 3000 miles is right.

We all do not drive in the same conditions or treat our trucks the same so it only makes sense that the oil change mileage should vary.

I drive about 75% highway miles so it would make sense that I could go longer between oil changes than someone that drove 25% hwy.

Throwing variables like weather, idle time, dust, towing, terrain, lead foot differences then it makes sense to change when the sensor tells you to change.

The sensor has had me change anywhere from 7000 - 9000 miles the first 3 times.

I figured that'd saved me about four oil changes....about $150.

Other automotive manufacturers are installing the same type of sensors. My Honda had the same thing with the same results for me about 7000 - 9000 miles.

I just did an initial change ar 1,500 miles. Being old school, i wanted to get the initial break in junk out of the engine, though they say the engines are broke in at time of purchase. Certai ly, i cant hurt anything.

i use kendall gt1 full synthetic and plan on changing every 4000-4500 miles, unless i have been working it real hard.....overkill? Maybe but i feel better.

i used a motorcraft filter that i had left over from my old f150....fl820s.

i had bought a mopar 899 but the darn thing was all dented when i took it out of the box....box was fine. I guess someone took it out of the box, dropped it, and put it back...go figure

Mine shows about 40% left after almost 6,000 very easy miles. I assume it doesn't go down as fast because most miles are just cruising on the interstate.
