Veh braking while backing up

Good morning all,

I have a 202 Ram 1500 Laramie with a 5.7 Hemi in her, I have had her for about 3 months now and this has only happened 3 times now. While backing up the truck will come to a stop I will get some chimes from the HUD and a BRAKE waring will pop in in the HUD. I cannot find any reason why this is happing? Any Ideas? Thanks.

Is your door open when doing this? Seat belt buckled?

Park sense will slam the brakes if it senses something in the way. If you’re backing down a sloped driveway it will sense the ground coming up when you get to the street. Turn off your rear park sense to stop this from happening. As mtnrider stated, backing up w/door open or no seatbelt does it too.

There should be an option in Uconnect to disable the brake assist from park sense so you don't have to disable it completely.

OP has his rear parking assist enabled: Even a lil plant or tree limb with leaves will cause the system to activate.

PARKSENSE FRONT AND REAR PARK ASSIST
The ParkSense Park Assist system provides visual and
audible indications of the distance between the rear and/or
front fascia and a detected obstacle when backing up or
moving forward, e.g. during a parking maneuver. If your
vehicle is equipped with the automatic braking function,
the vehicle brakes may be automatically applied and
released when performing a reverse parking maneuver if
the system detects a possible collision with an obstacle.
The driver can override the automatic braking function
by pressing the gas pedal, turning ParkSense off via
ParkSense switch, or changing the gear while the automatic
brakes are being applied.
• Automatic brakes will not be available if ESC is not
available.
• Automatic brakes will not be available if there is a
faulted condition detected with the ParkSense Park
Assist system or the Braking System Module.
• The automatic braking function may only be applied if
the vehicle deceleration is not enough to avoid colliding
with a detected obstacle.
• The automatic braking function will not be available if
vehicle is in 4LO transfer case mode.
• The automatic braking function may not be applied fast
enough for obstacles that move toward the rear of the
vehicle from the left and/or right sides
The automatic braking function can be enabled/
disabled from the Customer Programmable Features
section of the Uconnect System.
• ParkSense will retain its last known configuration state
for the automatic braking function through ignition
cycles.
• The driver can override the automatic braking function
by pressing the gas pedal, turning the rear system
ParkSense off via the Rear ParkSense switch, or changing
the gear while the automatic brakes are being
applied.
The automatic braking function is intended to assist the
driver in avoiding possible collisions with detected obstacles
when backing up in REVERSE gear.
NOTE:
• The driver is always responsible for controlling the
vehicle.
• The system is provided to assist the driver and not to
substitute the driver.
• The driver must stay in full control of the vehicle’s
acceleration and braking and is responsible for the
vehicle’s movements.
Refer to “ParkSense System Usage Precautions” in this
section for limitations of this system and recommendations.
ParkSense will retain the last system state (enabled or
disabled) from the last ignition cycle when the ignition is
changed to the ON/RUN position.
ParkSense can be active only when the gear selector is in
REVERSE or DRIVE. If ParkSense is enabled at one of these
gear selector positions, the system will remain active until
the vehicle speed is increased to approximately 7 mph
(11 km/h) or above. A warning will appear in the instrument
cluster display indicating the vehicle is above
ParkSense operating speed. The system will become active
again if the vehicle speed is decreased to speeds less than
approximately 6 mph (9 km/h).

Mine would slam on the brakes if I was backing down a sloped driveway into the street or during/after the rain it would pick up the wet reflection from the pavement and activate the brakes also.

I had a 2019 and a software update helped with the sensitivity.

Mine is OK, but I learned. I was at a restaurant with a MC Club backing near the restaurant, and the system picked up some leaves on a branch and slammed the brakes. BOY, did I get some weird looks. If I know I will be backing in a lot of tight spaces, and I am concerned, I may turn on, but TBH, I leave that PITA system off. But usually, I just leave the sensors on low and keep the rear assist turned off. When I put truck in garage due to bad hail coming, I have only a few inches front and rear, and not need that system locking up the truck. I need no nanny system to tell me how to back up and when to stop. The rear camera system is nice also, and helps.

Thanks all that does help out alot. Yes all the doors are closed and the belts clicked. I will try and adjust the sensitivity.

After reading some of these posts I'm certainly glad I don't have any of those devices on mine. No forward collision warning, no issues with backing up with the door open the seat belt unbuckled; no auto-braking if there is something behind me. I tried that last part by putting a plastic trash can behind me and watching the camera and I backed right over the top of it without a problem. Then I put a piece of electrical tape over the lens because it's irritating to see the screen come on out of the corner of my eye when backing, even with the radio turned off.

My driveway is BARELY sloped, but my neighbors yard is almost like a hill behind me. When I first got my truck, it would slam on the brakes and tone. It made me feel like I had impacted the neighbors lawn. Ive backed out of my driveway 1000s of times with my 2015 and NEVER hit anything.

That "warning system" is entirely too sensitive. I no longer get the brakes popping, but Ive had to change the angle that I back out.

I had to turn my rear braking assit off, much of the time I'm backing down or up hills, towards banks or ditches or just grass and weeds. It would activate constantly.

This is what my 2021 Grand Cherokee does on occasion and our driveway is sloped.Sometimes cars are passing by also.

It uses sonar.

Can't you folks with that system just disable it? That would be a PITA.

READ above, go in and turn off.

Mine has defeat switches on the dash both in my 2500, and in our chrysler pacifica van. Thank goodness cause it is too sensitive even turned down. So I leave them turned off.

When the salesman rode with me on a test drive before I purchased my truck, I turned around next to a building that had some slightly sloped parking spots. The braking kicked in and the salesman said "well you bought it now because you just hit something". Scared the crap out of me. I turned the feature off after I bought it.
