cummins 5.9
Hello. my name is vern olson. I captured the attached pic with a borescope yesterday, Can you tell me if this 2004 dodge cummins 5.9, piston is reentrant bowl or non-reentrant? My engine is by engine serial number early 04 that was installed in my 05 truck. It had 03-04 injectors in it. I recently had a shop In southern Oregon replace injection pump and injectors. (long story) They told me that they scoped a cylinder and said that the engine has 05 non-reentrant, wide bowl, pistons, so they installed 05 narrow spray injectors. Ok, now it is a variable rate smudge pot above idle, and I can easily get 1400 degree egts on average local grades, empty, 8540 gvw. I mean it starts right up cold or hot, no cold start haze, idles wonderfully, smooth all the way, no discernable missing. But here is the problem, ever since the new injectors is shows blue/black to black smoke even on light throttle, medium to heavy throttle and it makes a black cloud until I let throttle near completely back out of it. Steady throttle at all speeds no noticeable smoke, light throttle on steady uphill grade blue/black smoke. On hard throttle it still makes great power but egts climb like a rocket. Fuel economy, (hand calculated) empty has gone from 17.5 avg. to 13.5, or 14ish if I really drive like grandpa. So yesterday I pulled one injector and scoped the cyl, it looks like reentrant to me but I don't know common rail designs all that well. It does indeed now have Reman injectors for 05, #DT590002R, number says Dtech brand.
