Hello I’m new to Cummins I have always had a ram with a hemi. Looking at a 2006 ram 2500 and a 2008 ram 2500. I now 5.9 and 6.7 is different. But what else? Would you stay away from one. Or which years had less problems. Just new and trying to figure out what to get. Thank you in advance!

Go for the 2006 5.9 its a very good engine, so long as it has not been modified, my self I would stay away for the first few years of the 6.7 it had the emission problems...

I agree with @06 Dodge as long as the earlier model year truck is in decent shape for it's age.

Early 6.7L engines definitely had some DPF issues. Those systems have improved over time.

Unless the OP is planning to hit a pothole in the 6.7. Rumor has it hitting a pothole makes the DPF and SCR fall off.

5.9 all day every day.

Unless the 6.7 has had the “issues” removed, as well as complete documentation of what new parts and tuner/software is in place. The sticky wicket with buying a truck missing those bits is if you don’t know what was done, it’s hard for a tech to fix. Because it’s not original.

The same logic applies to a 5.9, albeit a lesser extent because it’s a simple engine with few emissions components to begin with.

I personally avoid buying modified vehicles, not just engines but suspension etc. For one thing I prefer my own flavor of mods. And the modified vehicle is more likely to be a challenge getting maintenance and repairs done because of non-standard parts.
