Just picked up a 14 tradesman CC long bed 4x4 with the 6.4l with 144k on the clock. This is now week 3 of ownership, and had a CEL for P0740 (TCC lock up solenoid) pop up on Saturday. Not feeling any shudder, not seeing fluctuating revs. Dash guage is showing, at time of CEL, a trans temp at 248*F.

Trans fluid is still nicely colored, and smells Good. This was a fleet vehicle in its past life with a good maintenance history. Fluid level is showing where it should wheb hot.

Cleared the code as so I can try to replicate the failure conditions. Failure conditions were 70mph, cruise on, after 90 minutes of highway driving.

Took it to work, sitting here now typing this. I've got a 70 minute commute to work and showing 212*F trans temp.

I know Chrysler has had its trans issues in the past. Am I looking at the same problem, or something else?

I'll have do wait till this evening after getting home to temp probe the cooler lines to make sure the TBV is functioning.

The trans temp in mine is always in the 170’s if I remember correctly. I dont think I have ever seen it above 180, even when towing the travel trailer at wide open throttle up a long hill.

I have not heard of any cooling issues with these newer trucks.

I don't think mine has been above 172, even pulling 16K. Either a sensor issue, or a real problem.

Update for those watching our for my records, either or.

Drove about 90 miles today. Journey started at 4pm and pulled in the drive way at 640p. Had a 30-45 minute stop with the truck off in between

Pulled out the thermal camera to verify operation of the TBV. As far as I'm seeing the valve is operational, and the cooler is doing its job. Seeing a temperature change of 70*F (217*F. On the hot side, 147*F on the return from cooler)

TBV is showing 183*F

I did not snap a picture of the sump (thought I did, but guess I missed the button)

Any ideas? No code thrown so far. Slight delay in 2-3 shift, hard to tell but might be some slipping when taking off in first.

Images show EVIC followed by thermal images. Spoke to the dealer I purchased it from, they did provide a 6mo/6k aftermarket warranty. So it'll go in next week.

And it won't let me share a Google drive link to them either?

That’s really weird, we’ve been talking about trans temps on the synthetic oil forum for quite a while. Recently we found a thermo bypass block and since I’ve installed it, my trans temps have been substantially lower, 50-60* lower than normal.

Adding to this with an update, been a minute to say the least.
2 weeks ago, the teams finally gave up. Shifted into fourth, then nothing.

Had the transmission rebuilt by a reputable rebuilder here in northwest Arkansas.

The day I picked it up, I was told it was “running great”. I asked if they got it to operating temperature on the test drive. I was told, “yup, shifts great!”

I then asked what was the transmission temperature? “I don’t know, I didn’t look”. Was the response.

So long story short, when I left the lot, it was at operating temp, Trans at 185*. 6 miles down the road pulling into my office, it was 212* trans temp.

Called them immediately, and emailed to document everything. I’ve Ben told that is normal and nothing to worry about. I know better...

A week later and it’s still regularly hitting 220* on my 40 minute commute to work.

TBV is functioning (both lines equally scalding hot into and out of the TBV)

Has an aftermarket larger cooler already

Cooler system was flushed during rebuild
New:
converter
Valve body
Clutches
“Shift kit “
Seals
Fluid
Filter

Didn’t see anything about them replacing the pump though.

Any thoughts?

Something still isn't right or the gauge isn't reading right. Mine is consistently at 168 cruising and will creep up to 174-176 on long 80mph highway runs. It will stay around 175 towing about 6000-8000 pounds. Highest ive seen mine was waiting in covid test line idling for a long time and it got up to 180 and then quickly dropped once I got on the road.

I watch mine like a hawk now after getting it rebuilt a couple months ago. I've thought about bringing it back to get the thermo bypass done or asking if they did it when they built it because I don't want to take a chance on that being a major failure.

I'm in georgia and we have been in the 90s consistently outside like your thermometer shows.

Well, it’s nice to know I’m not crazy. Prior to rebuild I could keep Trevons around 190* by locking out 6th via manual shift or tire/haul.

I’m going to try that tomorrow morning on my way to work.

Supposed to stop at the trans shop for my one week “leak check” to keep my warranty valid.

I’ve got a 2yr/24k mile warranty with the rebuild. I’d rather not have to use it. Also don’t really want to trade it in as it’s not a bad truck at all. That I can’t find another long need to save my life.

I would take it back and make them fix it. It’s broke. Either the pump Inst working correctly or it’s got a block somewhere. Or it doesn’t have enough fluid in it.

With the TBV on my truck I run no hotter than 150* on 108* days here in NM.

Pulling my 10k trailer it’s only ever got to 164* and that was when it was 102* out.

Ok, I think I found the issue. Just put a scanner on it to check for any codes.

SAME D*MN P0740!!!

They never replaced the pump!!!

I’m, to say the least a bit livid as that was clearly stated on my after hours drop envelope, plus emails stating what the issues were prior to a rebuild.

And even better, I pulled the dipstick to see some nice glittery specs floating in brand new fluid.

Service ticket lists all the parts put it, not one mention of the pump.

Hopefully I get to have a productive conversation with them in the morning when I go back for my leak check.

Did your truck shift into forth and just acted like it went into neutral?

Replace your solenoid pack, and possibly your valve body. My 1500 runs up into the 190s. It hasn’t gotten higher than 194.

When it initially went out, yes. That moment is when it was taken into the transmission shop.

And now after a 45 minute drive to a doctors appointment a hard code with CEL illumination has come up. P0740.

Temperatures are still elevated, had the joy of feeling the converter slip and unlock at the moment the code set.

Few more hours and I can have a conversation with the shop.
