Like everyone else said you can't increase your capacity but if you don't do it that often, just add a set of helper springs and you'll be fine. I've got air lift helper springs on mine and they do alot for me with my toy hauler that has 1100lbs of tongue weight.

You using a WDH too and still needed air lifters?

If you don't do it often and only go a few miles I would at less the some air bag to go in your coils.

If you only do it rarely, and its not that far, why not be smart about it and break it into smaller loads that are within your appropriate payload limits.

Remember, payload limits include passengers, fuel, and anything not on the truck from the factory. I figured it out when I had my 1500 and all I could carry was like 600lbs by the time my family/fuel was loaded. 1500's also come with P rated tires (at least my 07 did), so you must be aware of their lack of load handling as well.

Break it into smaller loads.. don't risk it.

So me going 4,000lbs over the limit in the bed with out any helpers was a bad thing, oh did i mention that i drove 100 miles like that going down a back country highway at 55 mph.

On a side note has anyone ever thought about throwing on a set of Semi air bags in the back replacing the coils?

1611 on your truck, 1630 on mine. It varies. The ram site has all the specs and capacities

At the risk of giving competitor info

RamSLT,

At the risk of giving competitor info, I think this is the system that does what you suggest:

CoolRide :: 2009 and Up Dodge Ram - CoolRide Rear System - RideTech.com - Suspension Specialist - Online Store

However, once you take out the coil springs, if the air springs mess up, you cannot drive. And, it looks like you have to replace the shocks so the cost goes up.

That's why our TLC is better - you keep the coils and add the largest air springs to level the load. At our current sale price of $399, you can't get a better system or price.

The manufacturer sets the GVWR and GCWR, so, no matter what additional suspension is added, that number cannot be changed or exceeded.

From: http://www.vehix.com/car-reviews/2007/dodge/ram-1500/4wd-quad-cab-1405-slt/vehicle-specifications

Weight Information (1500 4WD SLT QuadCab)
Gross Axle Wt Rating - Front (lbs): 3900
Gross Axle Wt Rating - Rear (lbs): 3900
Curb Weight - Front (lbs): 3034
Curb Weight - Rear (lbs): 2182
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating Cap (lbs): 6700
Gross Combined Wt Rating (lbs): 9500

Sooooo...
Total weight = Front + Rear weight = 5216lbs
Maximum Cargo/Pass = GVWR - Total Curb Weight = 1484lbs
- 100L of fuel = 167lbs = 1317lbs
- 4 adults (180lb) = 720lbs = 597lbs

So... with 4 adults, a full tank of fuel in a 2007 1500 Quad Cab SLT, you can carry less than 600 lbs of Cargo.

4th Generation 2012 1500
Weight Information
Gross Axle Wt Rating - Front (lbs): 3700
Gross Axle Wt Rating - Rear (lbs): 3900
Curb Weight - Front (lbs): 2500
Curb Weight - Rear (lbs): 2019
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating Cap (lbs): 6025
Gross Combined Wt Rating (lbs): 8500

So, again..
Total weight = Front + Rear weight = 4519lbs
Maximum Cargo/Pass = GVWR - Total Curb Weight = 1506lbs
- 100L of fuel = 167lbs = 1339lbs
- 4 adults (180lb) = 720lbs = 619lbs

... they broke the 600 lb capacity mark.. but just barely..

just goes to prove ya dont need a big truck to do a big job

Depends on the definition of BIG.

I prefer to play it safe, although I understand the desire to see what a truck with do... I recently hauled 500 paving stones at 6 lbs each - I was really tempted to load an additional 100 or 200 - but I was only hauling them 8 miles to my house and two trips seemed more prudent.

It seems that strengthening a 1500 to haul more than the manufacturer states it can haul would be far more expensive than trading up on a 2500 and I'm not sure I'd trust that the upgrades (or something neglected in the upgrade) wouldn't fail.

I'm disgusted that you would put the general public at risk carrying a load like that. Your front tires are ready to come off the ground, your back suspension is either riding on, or nearly riding on the axle, your stopping distance would be grossly increased, and your tires are likely not rated for that kind of load.

Just because the truck doesn't break, doesn't mean its okay. You do need an appropriate truck do do the job, one that is designed to handle the load properly... or in your case, a trailer, again properly set up would do well too.

Weight Information - Sagebrush's Truck
Gross Axle Wt Rating - Front (lbs): 4750
Gross Axle Wt Rating - Rear (lbs): 6000
Curb Weight - Front (lbs): 3053
Curb Weight - Rear (lbs): 2411
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating Cap (lbs): 8650
Gross Combined Wt Rating (lbs): 17000

Sooooo...
Total weight = Front + Rear weight = 5464lbs
Maximum Cargo/Pass = GVWR - Total Curb Weight = 3186lbs
- 100L of fuel = 167lbs = 3019lbs
- 4 adults (180lb) = 720lbs = 2299lbs available to carry..
- Paving stones 500 x 6lbs = 3000lbs
Net over weight = 701lbs

Good thing you didn't carry the other stones.. granted, if you didn't have 3 other adults with you, you'd likely be pretty close to your max.

I was just looking at some numbers from my 2010 Ram:

GVWR: 3,039kg (6,700lbs)
Curb weight: 2,383kg (5,254lbs)

The difference is 1446 lbs which means you should've been okay - maybe a little over with passengers, etc.

Am I missing something?

Food for thought, you could add 1800 lbs to that 1446 with a 2500 crew w/ Cummins :)

Wrong. Curb weight includes fuel. Curb weight is the way it would sit in your driveway

The numbers on my 2011 are different for some reason:

GCVW is 12500 I wonder why so much more?

Here's all of them:

Weight Information
Gross Axle Wt Rating - Front (lbs): 3900
Gross Axle Wt Rating - Rear (lbs): 3900
Curb Weight - Front (lbs): 3012
Curb Weight - Rear (lbs): 2186

Of course, I rarely have more than either just me or me and my wife in there so I should be plenty fine with a half ton in the bed.
