So I've own a few 4th Gen truck varying in mileage and years.

I've had 2 2009 Rams. A 2013 and 2 2014's.

This is my 2nd 2014. It has about 42k miles on it and I am having a very strange issue with my brakes that none of my other Ram's had.

When I lightly press the brake pedal it will go to the floor. The first time it happened it scared the hell out of me but I didn't hit anything or anyone because I immediately threw the truck into neutral. It happens a lot in stop and go traffic and when backing or pulling out of my garage.

I can now make it happen consistently if I let off the brakes completely then slowly apply them the pedal will go to the floor every time. If I apply the brakes quickly I get normal feedback and my brakes work like normal.

Things I've checked:

Brake Fluid is good and reservoir is at a good level.
Brake pads have plenty of life on them.
Rotors are fine.
Calipers are fine and I'm not leaking any fluid as when I checked my fluid I didn't have to add any.

It was suggested to me that my master brake cylinder has failed or is failing. Anyone have any input?

Thanks

Master cylinder is failing/ leaking. Have someone step on the brakes while in park ofcouse, and stand by the the master cylinder with the hood open , and listen closely for air hissing noise

Throw some soapy water on the master cylinder, should be bubbling pretty good.

Yeah, I’d also say it’s most likely the master cylinder. Replace it ASAP.

Had the same thing happen on a nissan armada. Found it was the piston on master cylinder.

Thanks for the quick responses.

Took what what said and checked my extended warranty and that's covered.

Just dropped it off at the dealer and told them the same thing master cylinder. Should hear back today with what it is exactly but what a weird failure! Like I said I've owned a lot of 4 Gens and never had this happen.

Got lucky and because of my recalls they were able to a rental at no cost.

Thanks again!

Sounds like master cylinder to me

I would change out master cylinder before it fails completely.

could be the booster that the master cylinder sits directly on as well, but usually its like 10:1 mc to boosters

or replace 2-3 mc then replace the booster when the car/truck has like 2-300k

Well a little update...

They had the truck all yesterday and they checked my brake pads which were fine. They checked my fluid level which was fine.

The story gets kind of strange from here because I never received a call from the dealer all day.

Checked my Uconnect App and surprise my truck isn't at the dealer anymore it's at someone's house. Roll over to the dealership and the service adviser forgot to call me. He started by saying that the tech wasn't exactly sure what needed to be replaced and that an overnight drive would help determine what exactly is going on. By the way the technicians don't work again till Monday so this tech was keeping my truck for three days.

Obviously I was pretty pissed and demanded the truck be returned back to the dealer and that it was crazy to authorize a tech to keep my truck, that is having brake issues, over a 3 day period without my prior consent. So hour and a half later we get the truck back to the dealer pretty late at night and I'm told work will resume on Monday trying to figure out what's wrong.

As of right now I asked to have a meeting with the service manager, his boss, the general manager, and whoever else so I can get this dealt with on Monday.

That's crazy!

"overnight drive" and "3 days" are not even close to the same thing. Besides, how would him parking it at his house be any different than it sitting at the dealer for 3 days?

Be interesting to see how they weasel their way out of it.

That really does sound insane. I mean, I HIGHLY doubt the dealerships insurance policy covers that. HIGHLY doubt. I mean some of the dealerships around here have an EXACT route all test drives are to go on, they say for insurance reasons. I don't know if thats true... but to have a customers vehicle out like yours?? Is the techs wife or kids driving it too?? Did the tech move a buddy on the weekend of need to tow something?? - kidding on those.
But to take a vehicle home could easliy fall into the "well prove he didn't" catagory.

I wish I had a clear head when all this was going down. I should have taken screen shots of my Uconnect App showing the truck not at the dealer and recorded the conversation that took place at the dealer before we went to pick it up. The whole thing still has me boiling.

To top it all off I decided to check my dash cam and see what was done to my truck during it's time at the dealer and during it's drive to his house and go figure... the thing wasn't working. I've been having on and off issues with it for a while now so that's what I get.

I've got tomorrow to cool my jets and put together what I want to talk about on Monday and possible resolutions to this whole situation. Of course I still have to trust them to get my original problem fixed. I was told last night after we brought the truck back the tech was able to replicate my issue on the drive... for whatever that's worth.

I don't really have any other dealers around me. I have one dealer 45 minutes away in Milton that I don't totally trust their service dept and another in Foley that I've never been too. Though checking dealer rater shows they have great reviews for their service dept so maybe that will be worth the drive for any future dealer visits.

Just for the hell of it here is a picture I snapped when we pulled up to the techs house to take my truck back to the dealer.

No way i would put up with that... FCA would be getting a phone call over that ********!
I bet the dealers insurance policy dosent have any coverage after working hrs and shop closed... tech joyrides.
Alot of what if`s here... just a bad idea all the way around. I`ll bet that dealer wont be doing that again with "your" truck!

Wow. So a stranger took YOUR vehicle to HIS house. That's a new low. That would almost be worth watching the news for! Sorry, I stopped watching the news years ago, your situation sucks, but you do have the upper hand now. Sounds to me like I would skip the dealership, its owner and go straight to FCA. Ball's in your court now.

Wow, that's crazy. You can't make that stuff up that's for sure. I'd be equally pissed that's for sure. Thank goodness for your u connect app. Never heard of a tech taking a customer's vehicle home overnight or for the weekend without your approval of which I'd never give.

This is the kind of underhanded bs that makes me cringe everytime I have to take my truck to the dealer and leave it there out of my sight.

Hope they can fix your issue. Agreed could be master cylinder, booster, proportioning valve, ect. Good luck
