I'm looking at putting a 4" lift kit on my 17 dodge ram crew cab 4x4 and I want to put 35s on it. Only question is rough country says I need at least 20" rims I really want to stay with a 17 inch rim. is that possible or should I look at other 4" lift kits?

Nick@gotexhaust carries a good selection of lifts and stuff you will like. He’s a preferred vendor here and a super great person too
You could also check out @customoffsets here as they are a preferred vendor
Both of the have outstanding customer service and support.
You can PM them for any info you need.
A 4” and 35’s will work well together. RC says no because they like the look of a certain stance.

17’s are possible, i know a memebr here ran 17’s on a 4” Superlift and im sure other folks running 17’s with ither brands will chime in. Not sure if the RC knuckles are the issue or what

I run 35's with 2", and i offroad the truck too, zero issues. You should not have any issues at 4" and 35's, and yes you can run 17" wheels, more sidewall while offroading, cheaper, lighter.
Have fun.

Wtf does rim size matter? A 35” tire is a 35” tire is a 35” tire. It doesn’t matter what it’s mounted on.

Different lift kits have different clearance issues. Some have to do with how and where the tierod boss is on the spindle plate. Others are how the spindle plate is shaped. This is why different manufacturers call out different minimum wheel diameters. These are usually referring to stock wheels. After market wheels or spacers will change the back spacing and might allow you to run something other than what is recommended.

The guy with the black truck and the procomp lift has a good video showing this. I forget his name

Any reason why you chose Rough Country?

Zone is a popular lift here, it allows 17’s with a backspacing of 4-1/2”, can’t run stock 17’s.

It has to do with the clearances between the stock wheels, and the new knuckle that comes with the lift.

I have a rough country lift on my truck, and am running the factory 20” wheels. Here is a pic showing how close the tire/wheel is to the knuckle, WITH a 1/4” spacer installed.

A 17” rim, with the factory offset, would have the rim and sidewall of the tire rubbing on the knuckle.

I like the factory wheels, so I opted for spacers.
Here’s a pic with 2” spacers installed. Gives a better view of the knuckle shape.
Same 35x12.50 on the same factory 20” rim.

Just another reason to go with Zone over RC ...

How so?

Looking at their sites, both zone and rough country state in the note section for their 6” kits, “stock 17” wheels can not be used.”

Other than possible casting quality, the knuckles they use look almost identical (rough country looks a bit thicker right above the wheel bearing).

Both use drop bracket, longer knuckles, and strut spacers for the front. The only difference is that zone uses springs instead of spacers for the rear.
Zone using new rear springs explains why their kit is $133.64 more than rough country.

Their 4” kits both use rear spacers, and are only $123 different in price.
Interestingly though, in the notes for the 4” kits, rough country states you can run 1/2”more back spacing than zone for the same diameter wheel.

First, why are you looking at 6” when he wants 4” ?

Second, under the fitment tab on Zone’s website for the D42 and D43 kits, it clearly states a 17 X 9 with 4-1/2” backspacing will fit 35’s

Next ...

Unless my info is wrong, it looks like all the factory 17” rims have a back spacing of between 5” and 5.75”.

Seems like that’s too much back space to me.??
Not saying you can’t run a 17, just not the factory ones.

Oh, and third, Zone uses a spacer in the rear if you want 2” of lift, and a new spring if you want 3” of lift ... Depends on the rake you have, the rake you want, and if you wanna add Bils up front for a lil extra lift ... Zone 4”F/3”R with Bils at .7 or 1.4 and 35’s is just about perfect in my book ... Fits in a 7’ garage door, and most parking garages345ea78b13a70e3eb760b05f1f28a340.jpg

Smooth, controlled, better than factory ... Not rough in the least ... Get the rear shock upgrade with the kit
