Hey guys....I have noticed when I run my 2014 Longhorn in 4wd auto, I get a slight shudder when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. This only happens when in 4 auto....2wd it does not happen.

Any ideas what’s going on here ?

Does it happen on dry roads or wet ? I have a dirt driveway and if I run 4x4 on either I get a shudder ! I was told it is normal on dry ground ! Curious to hear what the gear heads say ! Good post :)

I only run 4auto in the rain or snow...that’s when it happens. Under normal acceleration.

I don't notice it on mine, but I don't run 4WD in the rain, just mud and snow. In my opinion, good tires and not driving like a bat-out-of-hell, and you don't need 4x4 in the rain at all. (I definitely do not drive like an old man.)

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts substantially getting worse.

How worn are the tires...??? How bad is the shudder... might be there alll the time, just more prevalent when using 4wd it becomes amplified.
I use to get the 2/3 shudder no matter what mode i was in, it was a transmission problem, i got rid of the 2014 truck for the 2018 i have now. No shuddering at all.

I run 4wd auto most of the time since I have an open diff and don't have any shudder.

Tires are good. Maybe 10k miles. I don’t know how to quantify a shudder.

Does the transmission have a different shift program based on 2WD vs 4WD auto mode. It doesn't shudder in 4WD lock?

2016 Longhorn Ecodiesel here. I run it on auto 4 wheel drive sometimes, not often. Every once in awhile in the rain. Have never noticed any kind of shudder or any difference at all. :)

So, can I ask if it's a problem running 4WD auto in the rain? I ask because I had another truck and really like the feel, but I do know that some 4WDa suffer "wind Up" in the gear box running 4WD on the road.

Thanks
J

The Auto 4X4 trucks use a BW 44-44 transfer case. The power is not sent to the front wheels unless wheel slippage is detected, even if you have put the transfer case in 4X4 Lock. You can find a lot of posts about this transfer case and it's operation.
