I called True street performance a few days ago to ask about my options about the 65rfe. Jim told me that the upgraded 65rfe can only hold 500-550 max. NAG 1 swap for a 1000hp.

I'm doing a 518 which is a just 727 with an overdrive. It can be built to 700whp pretty inexpensively($2000-3000). Rebuilds if done yourself, can be done for about $200.

For a little more money($5000), you can do a 4l80e with a standalone controller that will hold 1000whp.

I was quoted $10k for a stock NAG1 from them and $17k for their built NAG1.

I can't speak for the 727 being a direct fit exactly, but I know it uses the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the modern Hemi. I wouldnt recommend the 727 for a street truck unless you can deal with only having 3 gears (high revs without the overdrive gear).

I do know that the 518 is a physically a direct fit, but it's still going take some work with electronics and shift linkage. The tradeoff with the 518's overdrive is it makes the trans weaker than the 727. My 518 came out of a 2nd generation Ram.

The 4l80e is a great trans to look into with your power and future goals. Check out charonblk07's 4l80e swap here;

Yeah the 46rh/re/518 is a good choice. I’m about to swap it in my 3rd gen soon, and a bunch of members on Hemi Truck Club have made the swap. It’s reported to handle 800 hp easily with some stock internals and a stage 3 build kit from patc. They have been beating on them for a few years now. It has 3 speeds and an overdrive. There’s a pretty good swap/build thread over there. I’m not sure how many people have done it in a 4th gen yet though..

Can’t add much more to what has already been said here. There are options now for swapping out the 545/65 in the 4th gens. You can run any trans you can bolt up if you follow how I did my electronics in my build thread. You just have to decide on your desired power level, number of gears, and budget. With shifter and standalone controller my 1200hp 4L80e swap cost me $7K, if you get a manual valve body 700hp 4L80 and use an adapter kit that can be down around $4.5-5K with a warrantied trans.

I built a 46RE/518 for my ‘99 1500.
I used www.transmissionpartsusa.com for all the Sonnax hop up parts, and all the extra stuff I couldn’t get from them I got from PATC.

I had put everything I could in except an input shaft & billet converter & I was at $1200 shipped (though I did already do a shift kit & deep pan previously).

It’s a pretty easy trans to rebuild, hardest part was R&R it.

If you are gonna do it yourself, PM me, I have the special tool to do the OD (if you have a shop press) I will loan out.

What special tool do you need? Is it the adapter you put under the press to correctly push down the od housing?
