Hey wrenchers, the service manual says to remove the oil pan as part of the rear main seal R&R.

Is removing the oil pan absolutely required? The picture and text implies that the "split seam" is between the seal retainer and the oil pan. Remove the retainer bolts and the 2 bolts going through the pan from the bottom, and the seal retainer should come out without dropping the oil pan.. Any word on gotchas or "don't do that because" are appreciated.

-edit-
I got impatient. Seal retainer comes off easily without dropping the oil pan or *****'ing the pan gasket. Now I need a repair sleeve.
