So i've been happy switching from conventional 5/20 to synthetic with a chaser of lubeguard biotech. 95% less tick. Done a whack of reading on the benefits/drawbacks over 5/30 over 5/20.....basically that 5/30 gives better protection but is thicker and takes longer to get up out of the oilpan in colder weather? I live in Kamloops B.C. and we get some cold winter periods....like minus 20s (c) to minus 40 (c). So is 5/30 gonna be detrimental in that weather? And is there any research or issue with using 5/30 in the summer and then changing to 5/20 in the winter? TIA for your opinion.....

You could also look at High Performance Lubricants Super Car 0W30 with a great synthetic media oil filter, too.

I've used this on a 10,000km OCI throughout last winter and the lab results were favorable.

I was in extreme cold climates in Northern Ontario and Quebec as well using this oil & filter combo.

Beautiful and silent cold starts and a whisper quiet engine at full operating temps.
So much so that I could hear the injector pulses ;)

Great oil, but not cheap, especially for us Canucks.

I'm currently doing another 10,000KM OCI but now using Red Line High Performance 5W30 with the Royal Purple 20-820 filter.

We'll see how that lab report comes back, but I'm really liking the HPL SC 0W30 as an all year oil for my rig.

0W-30 winter, 5W-30 summer.

Most 0W-30 formulas shear down, so don't leave in sump for summer. Besides, winter starts and stops dilute the oil with incomplete combustion blowby (water and fuel), so always dump winter oil for summer oil regardless of mileage.

I use Red Line oils, I also lab tested them new and at oil change. Their 0W-30 sheared down 8% @ 4,000+ miles. Their 5W-30 did not shear down at all @ 4,000+ miles. Using the identical batch of oil during the oil change.

Some newer oils supposedly do not shear down due to premium, newer VII additive types. Among these is HPL Super Car oils. I plan to try them soon.

I had an oil change yesterday and am trying 5W30 as part of a new SOP.

I plan to use 5W20 with LubeGard during the winter and 5W30 during the summer unless I learn a compelling reason not to.

I'm south of Ottawa, and besides last winter, we usually get our share of the cold.

Will this 0W30 meet with warranty approval?
I would think the manufacturers should be a bit more flexible given the properties of synthetic oils. I have about 1.5 years of extended warranty remaining.

We dont know about Canada protections, here you are protected under MOSS. That lubegard isn't ok with manu either I would guess.

0w30 is a special grade of oil, more shear stable then 0w40 plus all 0w30 is synthetic base oils, top manu's like Porsche and Merc have a spot for this. When you finish with warranty I would look at 0w30's. Nothing better in the cold imo, enough warm visc for good protection and better in cold the 0w40 for longer.

Warranties are always irregular in Canada.

The way I see it, if the dealership installed it, they're on the hook for warranty unless they expressly pointed out it would be cause for voiding coverage.

I like the 0W30 idea and looking forward the exploring future opportunities.

Put an oilpan heater on it,i live in Alberta and run oilpan heaters on my winter beaters. All you need is a 125 watt one to keep the oil warm, and they're alot cheaper to run then the block heater is.
This is the one i run on things with a flat oilpan like the trucks have.

This is the one i have on the 300 and our old 6.4 Challenger.
