So I found a truck for my son. 1994 reg cab short box 4x4. Auto, with the 5.2L. Body is in good shape, tranny was rebuilt last year, motor.......well that's why I got it for $600

Where should I look first. It doesn't burn antifreeze or oil. But antifreeze is getting into the oil at a drastic rate. I was debating heads or gaskets, but am wondering do I just start looking for a motor instead?

Thanks guys

I don't know your budget and time frame but I'd probably take the engine out and overhaul it. Seems like you've got a good deal on the truck so it's not too bad to invest a bit in the engine IMO.

It's gonna be the kids truck and we would like to get it running for under $3000. I know he will sink more into it, but my investment will be running and safe. He can spend his money on sounds and toys lol

Magnum engine.. sorry to say but the heads are probably cracked. Not definite.. but I'd be surprised if they aren't. You could do head gaskets and find a machine shop that will be willing to vat them and check for cracks. Not sure if that's a common thing or not.. but my dads shop does it so I'm sure they can't be the only one.

Hi cooleeman23,

Got any exhaust ticking? Any oil in the coolant? I ask because this could well be a head gasket. Had to change a couple of them on some older 318's that I owned.
Good luck hope you get it sorted,

No tick and no oil in the coolant. Actually runs smooth and lots of zip to it. Just fills the oil with antifreeze.

My plan was to pull the heads off and hope for something as simple as a gasket. If I didn't see anything then just continue pulling the motor and replace it.

AF in oil is head gasket most likely but be prepared for heads like Black Cody said.

Heads and head gasket would be a plus. As much as I'm willing to do a motor, I would prefer not to lol

If you get another motor it will probably have the same issues.

I suggest pulling the heads, getting them checked, and while you're there doing cap and rotor and plenum gasket repair

Early Magnum cracks are VERY common! Mine are holding, but that's the NEXT big project!

If the heads do end up being cracked I wouldn't go back with stock replacements, for just a little more get a set of EQ heads that have the upgraded stress points that won't crack again as easily
