the time has come for me to buy tires and it looks like I have more options if I go with something smaller than a r20. I have RCX 6'' lift with 37 12.5 r20s now. I like the look of a smaller rim anyway and was wondering if there are any disadvantages of going with smaller rim. Also anyone have pics with 37 12.5 r17 and 6'' lift? or recommendations if I move to smaller rim (r18, r17, r16)

Thanks

"google".. disadvantage... you cant run bigger rotors up front.. advantage.. tires are way cheaper... is money a concern?

It's your choice, but my neighbor leveled his F150 Raptor and put 37 x 12.50 x 17 Falken Wildpeak AT's on it, and the thing looked like something out of the Roger Rabbit movie . . . They looked like balloons, and the thing was wishy washy all over the highway because of all of the extra sidewall . . . 17's are better for offroad . . . 20's are better for onroad, and just fine for light trails . . . I'd take a couple pics of his Raptor, but he didn't last 6 months with that set-up . . . He sold em and went to 37 x 20's . . . He likes it much better on the road, and it doesn't look like a cartoon truck any more.

I know some people love love going down to 17", but I just never liked the "ballon", or "stuffed" look. Kinda looks like a balloon over inflated and ready to pop. I'm happy with just increasing the tire size on the 20" chrome clad or getting some real 20" chrome or machine finished rims.

Like bowersfj said, 17" are more for off road then on road.

The only real disadvantage is you can't put bigger brakes on. The bigger side wall "balloon" look is all in the eyes of the owner of you like it go for it. You just have to be careful on your tire selection and get something that's got a good load rating so you don't have a ton of sidewall flex, otherwise it'll make your ride very bouncy, and your steering sloppy.

thanks for all the replies... didn't know about some of these disadvantages. I'll go ahead and stick with 20s

Tires will be ALOT cheaper, plus offroad you'll have far many advantages over a 20" wheel. You'll actually be able to air your tires down for better traction, which you cant do with a 20" and not worry about dinging the wheels up. You'll also have a much larger side wall to protect the wheel. Personally I think 17" look way better on trucks than 20" wheels regardless of tire size. 20" wheels belong on cars IMO.

Ive got a 2001 with 37x12.5 17. I like the ride . Its not as solid as a 20 inch rim . It is a little softer with such a big side wall but i like my kidney stones to not get shaken loose when hitting a pot hole .

I'm planning on down sizing rims. The plus for me is you lose stock 20's that everyone has, and can get aftermarket 17's and tire for the same or nearly same price as 20" replacement tires. So why not save the money and gain style. If you feel a whole 1.5" of sidewall on the tire is going to wreck your ride your crazy! Your running 37's that ***** is no caddy its a truck! If getting groceries is your game go with 20's lol. Just my opinion man. NFG
