I've had a thread about this before, never really went forward with it..I've had this idea floating around in my head.. I'm really thinking about it now, since i found a shop that i trust.

They said they would like a drawing with dimensions prior to giving me a good quote, i'm sure i could get them to do it but id like to see if you guys can come up with some good stuff.

Big things are going to happen with this mod.

Basically im sure you guys have seen the pack rack/expedition rack that they make for tundras and tacomas. Well I want to do that but i want to make it about 1 1/2 inches higher then my cab and have a roof rack attached to it. I have a few pathetic drawings to give a rough idea.

Anyone who is good with autocad or even a novice and has access to it willing to help? what dimensions do you need?

I might be able to put something together for you. Can you scan your sketches and show us what you are talking about?

If the others are not able, hit me up. It's what I do every day in my own business.

Sounds like the other guys have probably got you covered by if needed I'll take a look at them as well. I do a lot of building design/drafting/detailing in AutoCAD as well.

Thanks everyone, its just tough getting what i have in my head out in words while explaining it enough for it to be designed. Wish i knew how to use autocad.

I guess you could say that. If you google a pack rack tacoma you will see its more of an offroad expedition style of a ladder rack.

I will be putting a roof top tent, spare 37" tire, some 4 gallon gas tanks, water tanks if needed, snowboard holders, highlift, shovel and axe. I will also be getting a bed box.
Im basically turning my truck into an overland camping style beast.

im a engineer that uses solidworks and autocad on a daily basis.

something like the attached what you are looking for?

depends on how much you want really depends on how much time it may take someone.

I never did get you a sketch... ooops I forgot about it and feel bad now... But I would definitely take Dubstep up on the solid works sketch... best option for best result to have a fab shop build. Prob quicker for him to get you a 3d sketch too.. CAD takes alot more work to get that 3D or 3d figured out.

Alright guys here are my ghetto ass drawings with some rough measured dimensions. Also some pics of pack racks that have given me ideas.

sideview.jpg
rack%20side%20view.jpg

1-1/2" tubing

Every corner could probably use some gussets.
Mounting im still trying to figure out. Im thinking maybe the same way that the pack rack mounts to the tacoma but with an additional support bar to bolt to under the bed rail.

double bar on the top like so 17.jpg
id also like it to follow the body lines of the cab like that pic also

If Dub can't get to it in SolidWorks, I'll try some either tomorrow or next week at work. I use SW everyday for my job. Probably won't take too much to model that in 3D.

it actually would be really easy to draw.

only thing i would recommend would be to keep it all in the same plane. from your sketch it looks like the part over the cab is raised from the bed part

also what do you plan to put above the cab? you may not need that many bars 8" apart

It is on the same plane but I also wanted to have a rail along the side. I plan on putting a spare tire up there and maybe some small boxes or bags if ever needed.

I see I forgot 2 measurements the rail on the cab part would be 1-1/2" higher. The accessory bar would be 14" from the bottom

How does this look? I can make up a drawing with dimensions on it for you to verify. Just wanted to see what you thought of the design. The front portion over the cab worries me. You'll have to find some way to support it on the front portion. Tie it into the A-pillars somehow. Or, make it smaller.

I used 1.5" aluminum tubing for this design. I'm not sure what you want it made it out of.

That almost spot on to what I had in my head. Just a few things. The two bars going across are on the top just like the rack on the tacoma I poster. Only one bar along the side about 13" from the bottom.

On the front the front guard rail would need to be removed, light mounts put on and a little protection bar about 10" from the base bar to protect my 9" lights like so aa064bfc61b33f0f5e97be14973bacb8.jpg

If you could add dimensions that would be great for my guy so he can give me a more accurate quote.

As for the front support I was worried about the support but I'll leave that up to them. I didn't want to shorten it since I would really like to be able to fit a 37" tire up front and my rooftop camper on back which is 72" so it will already be hanging off. I didn't want to mount it to the cab due to frame flex

I then thought that there are some pretty big ladder racks that get stacked pretty high that have over the cab more then 39" and mount to the bed rails so it shouldn't be that hard to solve

Edit again...I did find some pretty good tents that are shorter. So if you could hook me up with two drawing one the original length and one th hat has 10" taken off the front yaht would be great. I'll owe you lol. Both with dimensions please and THANK YOU

That front basket will have some issues being supported. needs another top tube to connect to or tie it into the bed rail section somehow so that it cantilevers over the main hoop right behind the cab.

Hard to describe but in words but I would take a tube layed flat in reference to the bed floor and bend it at a 90 to meet the front hoop (top corner) to the center bar that connects the hoops.. that will give you a point to connect the front basket and cantilever it off the front hoop while keeping the design of the hoops symmetrical.

KG, did you want the hoops to match the cab profile?

Confused me there a little there hahaha I need to see that in drawing form. But yes I want the hoops to somewhat follow the cab.

I'm not sure how much higher it would have to be to accommodate your idea. But with it at 26" it is 2" above the cab to accommodate for the flexing of the frame when on uneven ground. I did 2" to be on the safe side since I'm not sure how much I actually flexes at max.

See me previous post. I'd be willing to shorten the front about 10" to help with the issue also
