Is this a common problem?

yes. cheat is to use a Z bracket, IT slips in, at top opening, then goes to the other two holes. this 3way, the weight applied to the mount is reinforced with a Z shaped backing plate.
another way is to actually weld a plate voer teh metal, the drill out holes for mounting boards.

Any idea where z brackets like you describe would be available? Or is this something people fabricate themselves?

GoRhino (and I assume other running board brands) include z-brackets in their installation hardware.

For example, GoRhino part number 372240BA came with the RB10s I put on my truck. If the nutserts are gone, I think the z-bracket is a better fix than the AMP reinforcement plate.

EDIT: you can see the z-brackets in the product pic here: https://www.amazon.com/Go-Rhino-6840995-Mounting-Bracket/dp/B003K037LG but I dont know if they fit our trucks (plus you dont need that WHOLE kit, just the z-brackets and maybe the bolts/nuts)

I'm not seeing what you are calling Z brackets in the picture on Amazon's site. The brackets that are shown are the ones that attach to the rocker panel.

The silver brackets with one bolt and 2 welded washers. You "tilt" them into the holes that are in the rocker panel on the truck then the black support brackets for the actual running boards bolt to them. One nut in the top most hole (for the stud on the silver bracket) and 2 bolts for the weld nuts on the silver bracket.

The stock running boards, AFAIK, only have 2 holes in each bracket and the bolt directly into nutserts that are inserted or already there from the factory. The shiny brackets on the GoRhino boards (and others, I think) spread out the load and make the rocker panel captured between the board support bracket and silver bracket, so they wont rip out like nutserts would.

Okay, thanks.

I thought the z brackets were something that connected to the frame. That's what I get for thinking.

No problem.

Its unfortunate but there arent very many boards for a 1500 that connect directly to the frame. Im watching the Luverne ones on Amazon hoping the price drops to something reasonable, but my Go Rhinos feel pretty stable.

I had to use the factory mountings for the front brackets because the weld nuts were already in place (and I didnt want to risk deforming the rockers trying to pop them out) but the center and rear brackets use the included Z-bracket. I also kept the leftover Z-brackets in a safe place in case I ever need them down the road.

I purchased the brackets from Amp Research, they just came in the mail the other day. $112 for 3 of them but they look great and should be strong enough to solve this issue once I have them welded in place. Thanks for the links.

I have extra Z brackets if you need them I can mail them out. From my 2012 and extras from my 2017 they just sit in tool box

So my Longhorn a little while back had the driverside running board tear off. i'm curious if anyone sells a bracket that will fix this so i can get it mounted back on.

Thanks
Northspec Built makes a reinforcement / replacement mounting bracket for the fix!
