I am trying to sell my 2002 dodge Ram 2500 Quad Cab with 5.9 L Cummins Diesel with 51,353 original miles. I want to upgrade to a later ram truck - what is the best year to buy and what should i stay away from.

You wont find anything better than the 5.9 Cummins.

Damn dude! You drive much!? haha

I have a buddy that has 500K on a 2012! haha

I'd keep that truck! You'll regret getting rid of it!
You can get something newer, but keep the old babe!

You can get a newer one and delete it and be good. If you want to try the 6.7 -

If you are looking for Diesel look for 2014+. The HD trucks had a fairly substantial revision.

When I bought, I bought the same way I always did... One or two years back and under 20k miles. It seems to be the sweet spot for depreciation and value. It also ensures that all the kinks are pretty much worked out.

In June, I paid $22k for a 2017 with 19k miles... Worked perfectly for me.

Ahh, Neskowin. Such a charming little coastal community.

It is a pretty cool little town (used to live up in Rockaway Beach a few years back...)

Been to Neskowin quite a few times.

So you want a diesel, 4x4 and a 2500. It really boils down to how much you want to spend.

A pre-emissions, no DEF configured 2500 Cummins with the 5.9L is gonna be hard to find and pretty darn expensive for what you get. A 2009 model year had a lot of emissions problems so I'd pass on the first year of that generation.

2012 and up model years are pretty well sorted.

There is a limited supply of slightly used 2500 Cummins powered trucks over here in the PDX area for sale. Nothing wrong with them. I think the dealers are going out to the repo and lease turn over auctions and bringing them in.

For instance:

There are others, of course, but if you wanted to get an idea of what's available, that will get you started.

Of course, there are new trucks to consider as well.

Good luck with your search.

.

I believe he gets to escape the clutches of DEQ (I know that got to avoid it when I lived in Tillamook County), so emissions may not be an issue for him. :)

Yes, he won't have to go through emissions testing there.

However, pre-DEF trucks are getting old. My thought is that if he goes for a newer truck, it will come with the equipment. Doing a delete is an option but it can get expensive.

I'm very happy I did the full delete on mine.

I have a 2000 Cummins with 190000 on it and the motor runs exactly as new. I just bought a 2018 Bighorn 1500 Pentastar for a daily driver to save the Cummins for towing and no way will I sell it or trade it for a diesel that has emission controls on it. With only 54k you should keep it. Is it a 6 spd manual? If it is how much do you want for it?
