Hey guys,

I bought this grille for my bighorn from a friend. I’d like to have a standard chrome bezel, with black chrome inserts — to tie in my black rims and chrome bumper. I tried every way I can think of to safely remove the black coating, leaving only the standard chrome (2nd Img). Alternatively, I’d be just as happy trading bezels for a standard chrome, leaving me with chrome outer and black chrome inserts; and the inverse for the other. Any input is appreciated.

Is it the Duplicolor Black Chrome that he used? Might have to use acetone to remove the clear first and then a mineral spirits to remove the tint or "darkening" coat.

As far as I know, it’s factory. I tried acetone, didn’t get anything, perhaps it requires a super long working time.

Ah...I think you are going to have to get a OEM chrome one then.

Have you tried an aerosol paint remover? You spray it on and leave for a few minutes and then rinse it away. I did that on my 15 grille inserts that were painted and it didnt affect the chrome what so ever

I think thats how the grill came from factory, no? Off the tungsten edition.

If it is, i think your kinda SOL with removing the dark tint from the chrome as it is all done in 1 process.

A motorcycle shop near me does spray chroming. They can turn anything into a mirror chrome finish, id look into that.

No, but I will try this somewhere inconspicuous.

Thanks

Yes, you’re exactly right.

As seen in one of the img, I was able to remove a bit of it, I tried acetone, heat gun (trying not to destroy the chrome). Some did come off, but I have not found a solvent for it.

I’ll look into the chroming too.

Thanks for the info

If paint reducer doesn't work, maybe paint stripper.

I am just not sure what it would do to the chrome finish. Paint reducer will be fine... but the stripper may cloud the chrome.

Welp, here it is. Stripper worked amazing well. I could audibly hear the breakdown — sounded like rice crispies in 3 minutes.

Voila! It’s tungsten edition (black chrome) grille insert with standard chrome grille bezel.

Two body shops said it couldn’t be done.

Looks great! Body shops dont always know everything about accessory parts that are prefinished. Glad to know we could help.
