I have a 2025 RAM 2500 with the 6.7L Cummins engine and I want to make sure I use the right motor oil and I've always used Shell Rotella. I looked in the owner's manual and searched for the correct motor oil that meets the proper specifications. Shell Rotella 10w-30 T6 lists every spec except MS-10902 (API CK-4 and Cummins CES--20081). I emailed Shell Technical and they assured me that it meets all specs including MS-10902 even though it's not listed.

From Shell Technical:

Shell ROTELLA T6 10W-30 is compatible with the 2025 RAM 2500 6.7L diesel engine. While not listed, our product meets Chrysler MS-10902 performance requirements.

You may use this product with full confidence

Based on experience stay away from 10w30 oil, until I used it I never had the typewriter lifter noise, btw local dealership does not recommend 10w30 for the 6.7l diesel engine they say to use 5w40, if your engine does not have high oil contamination you can use 5w40 T-6 or Valvoline Blue 5w40

I’ve run T6 15w40 since my truck was new . I don’t live in cold enough climate 0 or below to have to run 5w40 which is the only reason to run it on start up .

Not sure your temps you run in but we run 15/40 Rotella T5 Summer, Winter we switch to Rotella T6 5/40. Temps can get to -50. The biggest thing I have found is don't follow the CHANGE OIL SOON Light. That is the biggest thing as it usually works out to 20000 Kms 12500 Miles. Way to long of service interval. These new engine with hydraulic lifters require clean oil to survive. 5000 Kms or 3000 miles is were i change. I have trucks that are at 450000 KMs and a couple with 1Million plus. I know Ill get flack on it my intervals but the proof is in my maintance records

The newer generations of Ram Cummins use hydraulic lifters and don't do well with T5 Rotella. These engines with the hydraulic lifters need to run Shell T6 full synthetic and I recommend 5w40, as I have read of the 10w30 causing lifter tick. BTW, Rotella oil is what is recommended by Cummins for these engines.

Run a good quality synthetic 5w40, opinions on oil are like elbows - we all have them, and use a good quality oil filter and change at regular intervals - follow your owners manual. DO NOT use 15w40, the 19+ motors use hydraulic lifters and the only 2 allowable viscosities (10w30 & 5w40) are on the oil cap and in the manual.

Ive ran 5w40 since 2006 in my 5.9l & 6.7 Cummins diesels, IMO its the best weight oil to use.

You can NOT use 15W40 in the 2019+ Cummins with hydraulic lifters.

5W40 can be used year round and in all climates, hot or cold.

I see the newer 6.7 can’t run the 15w40 , but no reason you can’t in the older 6.7 . Only reason , and it’s in my owners manual , the big reason for 5w40 is cold starts 0 degrees, and below . There is nothing better about it other than that . It certainly covers all temperature ranges , if I was having to start my truck in 0 or below I’d run 5w40, but I don’t . It’s certainly someone’s choice , but 5w40 is not a better oil . After that motor is started , and warmed up both those weights are doing the same thing .
