Anyone else have this problem? Truck went in for a recall and when they flashed the PCM it died. Service advisor said it was the cruise control recall. Now im out of the truck till they get a new PCM.

Hate it for ya bud. Mine is at the dealer right now getting this done as well as fixing a broken exhaust manifold bolt. I returned my truck back to stock before i gave it to them in an effort to keep them from bricking my PCM.........they havent called yet.

I have them checking the manifold tick also. Hopefully your pcm doesn't get bricked too!

Damn, I wonder how that happened. Power glitch, lack of knowledge/training by the tech servicing the vehicle. I bet he got in trouble...

Sorry to hear, hopefully they get it back to you ASAP!

P.S. Perhaps posting the dealership won't help prevent this from happening to others in your area. Just a thought, I know it could be a negative impact for that dealer, and even against forum rules (not sure), but I'd hate to read about other customers going thru the same thing. I'd be smokin' pissed too.

Is there a common mileage that the manifold bolts begin to fail?

No. 1000's post's on this issue. Short summary. Manifolds are cast iron, heads are aluminum. They expand and contract at two different heat rates. Critical that assembly follow the torque procedure. Manifold bolts are not hardened fasteners. When a exhaust leak occurs, the manifold warps or cracks. That then pulls or snaps the bolts. Once the manifold warps, it must either be replaced or flat planned. Some never have the problem, others have gone thru this 2-3 times.

In other words hope your exhaust manifolds weren't attached on a Friday at 4:45.

Is it "normal " for the PCM to die sometimes when getting flashed? They said its sometimes known to happen. I find it hard to believe.

You nailed it. My 2018 2500 was built 11/2017-12/2017. Holiday builds, Friday afternoon before a 3 day holiday, etc can effect the quality of that days run.

Plot thickens, I had some time today to sit down and look up my VIN to see recalls. Low and behold the recall was already done! So basically, i had a appointment for them to fry the PCM and be out of my truck because some Tech didnt look to see if the updated software was flashed before flashing again. And for them to tell me" its always a possibility that the PCM might die when doing a flash" I think is BS! More like untrained Tech error! Cant wait till tomorrow!!!!!

@ramcares can you help out with this? Id appreciate it very much. Ive have a few bad experiences with this dealership.

Im surprised the updater (software, not human) didnt just exit out because it already had the update.

I still think there is more to the story.
I will definitely find out face to face tomorrow

Unless you were looking over the Tech's shoulder while he was doing the flash, you are never going to know for sure what the straight answer is.

I know from my experience at work flashing both software and firmware, things do happen like power interruptions to either the component under load and/or the loader itself that can cause a component to brick. User error on my part has happened, but that is about a 0.01% event. Also, most loading programs will checksum verify the current load and verify before loading over to ensure compatibility.

Going in raging is not going to change the current situation. Let them fix it and move on.

Did you have the truck in the shop on May 23rd? I wouldn't trust the dates from that site. I had recalls done on my truck and went back to look and the dates were way off from when they were actually done. My point is they could have just entered it when you brought your truck to the dealer but the date is way off like mine were for some reason.
