Took my 2021 Ram 1500 in for a recall 24v-653 Software update. Appointment was at 9:30 am on Saturday. After the update my truck started braking slowly and jerking. I called Betty to let her know of the issue and she told me to bring it back in so they could see what was going on. Took it back in and the truck was taken to the back. They stated that they had to clear out some code? Got in my truck and immediately it started jerking again when braking and the brake and abs light lite up again. I called and told Betty that it was acting up still. She told me to bring it back in. Again it was taken to the back and supposedly fixed. I drove off again and still the same issues. I called again and was told they would have to keep the vehicle for a diagnostic procedure. So we left the truck and didn’t hear back until Tuesday that the lead mechanic would let us know the following day what was going on. Wednesday morning they stated it was the vacuum pump that needed to be replaced and would cost $716.33 for parts and labor. I told them I had to talk to my spouse and I’d call then back. They ended up calling me again to find out our decision. I told them we would seek another mechanic to replace the vacuum pump. They’re then told me it would be $215 for the diagnostic testing to pick up the truck. After speaking with my mechanic he told me that they should cover it since it didn’t happen until the recall service. I called back and mentioned this. The parts manager called me to let me know that the vacuum pump had nothing to do with the software update. I told him that I wasn’t having any issues until it was done and many other people complained about this same issue. I also told him I never was told about a fee for the diagnostic test. He said he would talk to Betty and she’d call me back. She called back and stated that the truck could be picked up and the fee was waived?

Here’s my issue. No problems with my truck until they worked on it and now it’s not repaired and I’m going to have to pay for another mechanic to fix it. Does this seem right to anyone else? Go in for a free recall and get quoted $716.33 to repair an issue I didn’t have prior to their free recall service?? If I’m in any type of accident because of this negligence, I will have all this on record here so my lawyer can have an open and closed case. This is terrible customer service and should be looked into. 4/8/2026

Update 4/23/2026: My mechanic stated the Vacuum pump was good and I also purchased another from MOPAR that works, but the truck was still having brake issues. My mechanic said my truck is not safe to drive and the dealership needs to repair what they broke. The dealership has my truck again. Now they’re stating that it needs the break booster replaced. The cost is $971 but they can do it at cost of $539.
I have contacted RAM at 300-853-1403. and should hear from a specialist in 1-2 business days.

I had no issues prior to this software update and don’t feel I should have to pay anything.

I have had that PARTICULAR recall listed as needed to be done since Sep 2024 and I refuse to have it done. TRUCK has been into dealership 3 times for other work BUT I HAVE refused to have it done. Every single time I allow the dealership to flash stuff, I get other problems. I had 5 flash updates done on 2-14-2023, and it caused (2) other issues to this day I have been unable to get resolved, tho the Dealership told me a STAR CASE has been opened, but, imagine this, they have no "PROOF" THAT a case was even opened/done (ie., they R telling me a Fairy Tale), but I know a work around. WHICH is why this recall will never be done.

When my 2014 was less than a year old , I got a recall notice for a few things.
Not listed was an update to the ecm , which dropped my mileage by a few per gallon.
I inquired about this with the service manager and was told that once updated there is no return.
That was the last time I will visit any ram dealer..
They turned my truck into something I never asked for.

I got a good example of just how much Ram Cares! I had issues and called Ram Care line. Said Okay someone will contact you in a day or two, never heard from them. I had to replace a sensor in my 2018 Ram diesel, out of warranty so I had to pay. A month later I get a notice that the warranty on that very sensor had been extended and if I already had it replaced to send in the paperwork and I would receive reimbursement. I did and sent it registered mail. Never heard from Ram. Called Ram Care a year later and was told someone would contact me. No calls no emails, and it is not like Ram does not have my info. It has been another year and still no contact. This is true real life example of how much Ram cares.

>> Considering this recall has to do with the abs module and you started having issues with brake system immediately afterwards, it sounds like a direct correlation to me.

Subbed/watching this thread.

my 2022 5th Gen 1500 DT, 5.7L no eTorque (limited) had the 24v-653 done back in April 2025 and (knock on wood) I thankfully haven't had the issues others have.

------------------------------
Recall Link 24v-653

NHTSA recall 24V-653 involves over 1.2 million Ram 1500 trucks (2019, 2021-2024) due to a software malfunction in the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) control module that can incorrectly disable the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. Dealers will update the ABS software for free to resolve this safety issue. [1, 2, 3]
Key Details of Recall 24V-653:
  • Affected Vehicles: 2019 and 2021-2024 Ram 1500 pickup trucks.
  • Issue: The ABS module software may cause the ESC to be unexpectedly disabled, violating federal safety standards and increasing crash risk.
  • Symptoms: The ABS, ESC, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Forward Collision Warning lights may illuminate, indicating these systems are unavailable.
  • Remedy: Dealers will update the ABS software, free of charge.
  • Manufacturer Recall Number: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) number is 75B (or 85B in some communications).
  • Contact: Owners may contact Ram customer service at 1-800-853-1403. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Owners should check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website to confirm if their specific truck is affected. [1]

Not gonna go into all the dealership BS and Woes and outright lies told, cause it will not come to any good. But anyway, thanks for the offer.
